Alright, I'm having a hard time understanding the finishing options of the BFR models.

There are different finishes, such as "Tobacco" and "Cherry". Then there's the "Burst" which is some kind of option thingy that defines something specific to the finish. I don't know what though. What does "Burst" means?

Then there's either "Quilt" or "Flame" which defines the pattern or texture of the finish. For instance there is Tobacco Sunburst Quilt and there's Tobacco Sunburst Flame.

One question pops up with that; Is there a difference between Tobacco Sunburst and Tobacco Burst, or is Sunburst the only option available with that finish? And is there a difference between Sunburst and Burst? If so, what? For instance I know there's Cherry Burst but is there a Cherry Sunburst?

And then a more concrete question with an example.
According to BassCentral, these 2 finishes are both Tobacco Sunburst Quilt:

Both are JP6, both are BFR, both are Tobacco Sunburst and both are Quilt. What's the difference? Because they clearly have not the same color.

The thing is though, that the first one has the same color as the finish Tobacco Sunburst Flame according to this:

Anyways, trying to understand the different "components" that makes a finish :)

If you click here Ernie Ball Music Man John Petrucci BFR 6 Guitar you can see the current available JP finishes. All are bursts meaning that they darken along the guitar edges. Pics that you see across the web are all over the place, but the colors are consistent from guitar to guitar.

Hello Lou,

I don't know if you misunderstood my post or if I misunderstood yours.
I don't wanna know what finishes are available now. I want to know what each component in the finish means. Regarding Burst, cheers for that! Is there a difference between Sunburst and regular Burst?

The difference in those two pictures regarding the color has everything to do with the way the picture was taken. Natural light vs. artificial light makes a huge difference, especially on guitar with figured tops. Color is the same, camera/location/possibly the photographer, are not.

Quilt and Flame are just the way the top piece of Maple is figured - flame is more "stripe" and quilt is more "wave."

The only difference between Tobacco Sunburst and Tobacco Burst is that the first one is a typo.

EB has "Tobacco Burst" and "Cherry Burst" but there are no colors in the lineup called Tobacco Sunburst or Cherry Sunburst - There are, however, 2 colors in the lineup with "sun" in the name: Purple Sunset (purple and golden burst on the y2d) and Vintage Sunburst (similar to Tobacco Burst but with the addition of red)

All "Burst" means is that the color in the center of the guitar is different from the color at the outer edges, ie the color "bursts" out from the middle of the guitar.

No difference between 'Burst and Sunburst. 'Burst is simply short for sunburst.

Cheers for that! That makes it a lot easier.

You cannot possible say that these 2 finishes are the same?

Really? Is it a chameleont color? (I know there's a fancier word than that.. but meh :p).

And yea, regarding Quilt and Flame it was indeed the way the texture looked :)

Thanks

Then I guess a lot of dealers have been writing wrong "Bursts" on a lot of finishes. To get this straight then, there are NO "Sunburst"'s whatsoever except Vintage Sunburst?

That explanation was quite good, cheers for that :)

Burst and sunburst mean the same thing, different people just say it differently. So Tobacco Burst and Tobacco Sunburst mean the same thing, same exact color.

In the two pictures above, the colors are both Tobacco Burst. In person, they would look the same, but the lighting is different in the pictures which makes the finishes appear different.

yes, its the lighting that makes them look so different... I can make my green Axis look different colors based upon where I take the picture... unless the darker one is the old walnut burst and its listed incorrectly. The only way to tell is to get the serial number and post it.

Quilt or Flame is not related to finish.
It refers to the figuring of the maple top on the body.

Oh, I see. Thanks a lot! I think I have a better understanding of this now.

It could be the Walnut Burst but I don't know. I think it's the Tobacco though.

But regarding Walnut, I just found something.
I have one picture(saved from BassCentral) which is called Walnut Burst Quilt and another one called Trans Walnut Quilt. This leads me to another question; What's Trans? Is it just something that they have there as a name? Or does it mean something like the Burst, Quilt and Flame does?

Quilt and Flame is definitely related to finish, at least to me. A Tobacco Burst Quilt is quite different from a Tobacco Burst Flame in the regards that they are not the same finish - one is wavy and the other one is striped - which means that flame and quilt sets apart different finishes meaning that flame and quilt is in fact very related to finish.

what about " Black Burst " and " Trans Black " ??
same story as " Burst " and " Sunburst " ??

Hah, you beat me to it!
This is kinda the question I asked about the Walnut Burst and the Trans Walnut. According to the pictures they does not appear to be the same but again, it might be different things when looking at it with different light-settings. However, why name one Trans and the other Burst then in the first place?

really? I was always under the impression that "sunburst" referred to the finish "bursting" to red, and then to black, whereas "burst" was a more general term. Learn something new every day.

I think it's only related to finish in the sense that they look different when they are finished- "quilt" and "flame" are different types of maple wood. For instance, if you looked at two acoustic guitars, one with a spruce top and one with a koa top, would you say the finishes were different, or the wood was different?

Well it's kinda different with the acoustic guitars, they usually have unpainted(or at least trying to look unpainted) making the spruce and koa top look like different wood. With these guitars it really looks like a different finish. Sort of like.. with Flame they've just drawn a brush sideways whereas on Quilt they would have drawn it a little more wavery.

But good to know that it's different types of wood. This is a little bit getting side-tracked but what's the difference in Quilt and Flame?

They should change the model name to IQ6 I think.

What..?

hey Tanax, you may want to try googling these terms as well. They are fairly universal and it may help you get to the bottom of things. I think the more you dig here on the forum the more you are going to get pulled in different directions... it may help with what you are looking for.

OK burst generally refers to the primary color fading out on the edges, normally to a darker color, here is a pictorial example, I owned a BFR Luke Amethyst Burst ( now belongs to my buddy Headstock ) and I currently own a Reflex the color is Amethyst, as you can see on the Reflex the color stays the same all the way to the binding.
