I have just acquired a very nice Honeyburst Sterling. I love it except for one thing, the tightness of the nut spacing. I have got used to my SR4 and find it a touch narrow at the nut.

To learn from all the experience here do you think I will get used to the spacing? As it’s a slightly older Sterling and doesn’t have the compensated nut I am wondering about getting an uncut nut and having it cut a touch wider. There does seem to be a lot of extra fretboard width to do this, especially on the ‘E’ side. In fact there does subjectively seem to more space between the outsides of the E & G strings to edge of fretboard than on the SR4, though I did round off the edges of that a touch.

Any suggestions would be most helpful. Thanks, Bob

I'm pretty sure you'll get used to it, since the neck is narrower you'll always have a slightly tighter spacing.'
But as you suggest, cutting a new nut is no big deal and you can get some extra tring spacing that way.

if it got the compensated nut youll have a bit more work to do to get it like it was, but making a new nut could be the way to go for ya.
just be sure it doesnt come so close to the edges that it rolls off the frets ;)

ps: im tempted to say that youll get used to it too ;)

Hey Bob

Hey folks - I just gotta jump in here and soothe some stuff.

Bob, don't feel so bad for starting the thread and getting all this. The topic of getting a wider nut on an EBMM bass is an old one. For some reason - it seems that it just aint goin' to happen. No logic - a wide neck option (not a custom shop thing - more like getting a piezo) would surely increase sales. More of make choices available to all types. And in bad economic times why not try for the financial gain? But - it is not going to be.

It is what it is..............

Ziggy Dude, all the nut stuff has made me laugh. When I start a topice with "lets talk nuts" I had my tongue in my cheek anyway! I getting much more used to the Sterling spacing and will be gigging the bass for the first time this Saturday. It's an open air festival and we go on at about 8.20pm just as the light begins to fade.... bliss...
I'm getting a great mid punch sort of Jacoesque tone in that mid switch position. In fact that is the only setting that I use on the bass it is just so damn good!
