So, I've been playing the new Al 5H fretless quite a bit, and I find that I prefer the series over the parallel setting--at least when going active.

What say you?

My BA5-H hasn't arrived yet. Still have a few months before it does, but having owned a SR5-H for a number of years, I've always prefered the series tone over the parallel tone. I don't expect my BA5-H to be any different.

BTW, I ordered my BA5-H in white with a tortoise shell p/g. I've had a white bass for years and think the combination of a white body with tort pickguard is very classy as well as classic.

I've noticed that the series setting is a bit louder than parallel, which makes sense electrically. Anyway, louder things appear to sound better in general. Be sure to compare at equal volumes. Having said that, I do prefer the series setting on the Big Al 4sss.

Didn't tried Big Al 5H yet, but did 25th 4H and I do like both switch positions, series and parallel, in active mode.
In passive mode parallel rules!
(try parallel/passive and mute a little bit highs with passive tone knob, ...You'll get an awesome slap killer)

...and yes, in series is much, much louder and have bottom middle range expanded somehow, that's normal to me from my point of view!

If that helps, ..I know I'm talking about two different basses, but both have the same ceramic pickup and 4 band EQ, there are some body wood difference, but I hope You're getting the point?

Funny--I prefer the parallel setting when the bass is in passive mode, too.

I'll see how things are different when I have a chance to play it in a band setting. We're on a bit of a hiatus right now because my guitar player is waiting for his baby to be born so he's on high alert and can't get away for our normal 3 hour gigs.

Oh, definitely. The ceramic magnets plus the mahogany body with the 4 band Bongo EQ certainly delivers quite a few different tones.

Low mid and bass bump with a slight cut of the highs is my current favorite.

Parallel/active for me on my Big Al 5 single H. I think that you and I are they only two knuckleheads that currently own one.

Alright, total noob question here. Can someone please explain to me what you mean by playing in series or parallel.

I know I should know this because I have been playing for 25 plus years but I don't and now I'm curious.
