Why does the AXE-FX require a preamp???

The crappy videos I have on my channel were recorded using amplitube 3, straight into my MOTU Ultralite. Amplitube has some nice tones, but most of the patches (IMHO) do not represent what this thing can do.

It's no replacement for an amp, but it's ok to record quick ideas and so on. I use it constantly for that, in my song writing process.

Does the UX2 have drum tracks with the software? I really have no idea how any of this stuff works, so I'm in for a big learning curve.

No it does not. What you get is the software that controls the guitar/bass/vocal amp settings and effects. Some basic recording software to try out(demo versions), and the hardware. There are other similar units out there that do the same things, but I think it is a great unit.

Even with recording programs you can buy, drums are not included. Try googling "free drum loops" there is a wealth of free stuff you can download to play around with.

Scooby, try the eleven rack. I have one and it's cool. It also gives you ProTools and a way of recording into your computer. They will be updating the sounds soon which will be a software download.

If you are interested, you can go to my soundclick page where I post mp3 samples of eleven rack presets I upload to Eleven Rack Users Group and Preset Exchange for the Digidesign Eleven Rack and it'll give you a better idea of how the 11R CAN sound -vs- the awful factory presets... You'll find that the factory ones are less than impressive and they'll likely leave you with a horrible first impression. That was my experience anyway...
