Someone once converted a SUB Sterling 4 into an 8-string bass, I think. But I haven't heard of anyone making one out of a Stingray.
Also, MM does not offer a bass like that. That would be kind of cool, though...

John Paul Jones isn't playing an 8 string bass with Them Crooked Vultures, it is a Bass Mandolin made by Hugh Manson Electric, Acoustic, Classical and Bass Guitar Shop - Mansons for Guitars .

I must really suck as a bass player because I am really content with just 4 strings. I do like 5 stringers as well though...

Well, for one it is an actual string making the octave note and not being "synthesized". I guess that means you would get a natural chorus sound as the two notes would never be exactly in perfect tune.

It would be very cool, but I don't imagine there would be a big demand for an 8-string bass. That would be a highly specialized type of instrument.

Being the owner of a 12ver, i can tell you i have never once found a situation where it was required. It is mostly a toy i picked up because it was a good price. The market is very limited for these types of instruments and i would never expect EBMM to make one. Would i like to see one? Heck yeah! But i would also like to see a twin-turbo V8 RWD Scion XB. Guess that is a long shot also. JOSH

An octave pedal won't track as well as a 8 string bass.
About the only thing I will use an 8 or 12 for is to play Jeremy hehe.

Bringing this back on topic... anyone that can master an 8 string bass and have it sound good commands my respect. Unfortunately I doubt there is a serious market there. I'd say simply buy a used Stringray, give it to a Luthier and tell him to call you when he gets it to sing in 2 Octaves

Most of the digital Octavers (i.e. a microPOG, RingTHING, PS-5) will track just about perfectly. Good enough for live work for sure, maybe not for recording, though adding a little chorus will get you pretty close to the real thing.
I just sold my RingThing, but I was messing around with the octave up and played a lick that sounded like the opening to "Jeremy", it was scary how close it came to that tone.

I actually looked at converting a Bongo to 10 strings, but it gets complicated pretty quickly, so I dropped the idea.
