Question thinking about getting a steve morse y2d

I have never really played a music man guitar before and recently someone has asked to trade their steve morse y2d in purple sunset for my gibson les paul 1960 classic , which i never really play and dont really like gibsons slim taper neck and the pickups in it are way too harsh I was hoping to get some opinions from people from the forums any help is appreciated.

welcome aboard... you've come to the right place to get some inside info on the Y2D... While i have not played a Y2D i can tell you that the morse are wonderful guitars.

holy hell!!! Now that I read this I am positive you should!

NOTHING plays like a EBMM. NOTHING! Just the highest quality, most solid, most comfortable guitars made, period! And although there is no way I could know what you mean by the pickups being "harsh", I can tell you that the versatility of the Morse will satisfy any player (other than those looking for a very specific sound such as my insatiable appetite to sound like Petrucci).

the pickups on the gibson had absolutly no warmth to them at all , they just were too harsh to my ears and way too high of an output

Gforce. The necks are what first attracted me to Music Man guitars. I really like the necks on the Silhouettes which is rather like the Morse as well. I suppose it's a bit like a Strat neck, but IMO much more comfortable. The pickups on the Y2D sound killer for hard rock music. Plus it is really a cool looking axe.

It sounds like you aren't in love with the Gibson, so I think this would be a good trade. Let's say if you are more of a Strat/Tele guy than a Gibson guy, you will be glad you made the switch to the Y2D.

i'm definitly more of a strat and tele guy gibsons are heavy and bulky and the one i have withe slim taper neck i just really dont like i got it cheap and thought i would get used to it and i didnt i want an all around versatile guitar that looks and plays great

believe me, you´ll love that guitar. the playability is awesome (EBMM necks are the best in the world), the PUPs are great for rock and cut through, it´s versatile and you can use it for nearly any kind of music-style.
if i wouldn´t have one, i would buy one.

If you've never played one before ... there are some big differences from your LP.

It's Strat scale (25.5"). Neck is more like a Strat neck, but well worn down and slimmer. There's no finish on the neck- it's just wax & oil, so way smooth. Body is like a Tele, but with an extra cutaway. It's flat, no tummy or arm carve. The edge is beveled so it's not hard on your arm, though.

Big thing that makes this guitar different is the pickup combinations. As you can see from the vid, there's an interesting mix of sounds- it's very versatile. Also easy to add a coil split, etc. if you want more of a single coil sound from the bridge.

There are also a few other neat things- locking tuners, the TOM style bridge, neck heel with good access to the upper frets, etc.

Because it's such a different axe than the LP, I would really suggest playing it to see how you feel. If you like the feel of it you'll be hooked. I'd say if you're more of a Strat/Tele guy, you'll probably bond with it quickly.

I have a Morse (original type) that I got in a trade for a Les Paul Classic,which has the slim 60's neck.The Morse is a completely different animal.Its slimer lighter with better upper fret access and better made then a Gibson. Play one first,the tone is not Les Paul or Strat like at all. You might like it.I do,but I still have a 71 GT.

Bought my y2d back in december 08; only played an lp before that. A few things;

- Sounds unique, highly defined and dynamic; it's SM's sound.
- Feels completely different to the LP; harder to play, won't hide any mistakes like the LP does; feels great in your hands.
- Build quality is high.
- Is a professional-pedigree instrument..you become conscientious of its superiority post going back.

Took a long time to get comfortable with it; at first I've had misgivings but now realise it made a better player of me. Now when I play an LP it feels like a toy and its sound is vanilla/boring to my ears; the LP also feels much restricted in terms of expressiveness. I don't wish to offend anyone..simply my experience and thoughts.

You should try before you trade, however keep in mind that it may not be what you expect but that in and of itself may be a good thing.
