Man Attacks Elmo In Winter Park Guitar Center
Costumed Character Not Injured In Struggle

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Winter Park police said a man suffered several broken fingers after attacking a man dressed as Elmo in a local music store Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened at the Guitar Center on Orlando Avenue at about 3 p.m.

Lt. Wayne Farrell, of the Winter Park Police Department, said a man who was hired to wear the Sesame Street character costume was in the store when the assailant entered.

Farrell said the man thought Elmo was a threat to him, attacked and a struggle ensued.

Police said the man who caused the trouble suffered broken fingers and was taken to Florida Hospital Orlando, where he will be Baker Acted and temporarily detained for mental health evaluation.

The attacker suffered from some kind of emotional distress, Farrell said. He said the man dressed as Elmo was the victim and was not injured.

Police said a display in the store was damaged during the altercation, but it was not immediately known how much damage had been caused.

There's a lot of nut jobs out there. I would have preferred Bert and Ernie but that's no reason to go ape-**** on Elmo.

it was a total misunderstanding all the way around...
it was EMO day at the GC and the it was misunderstood as being ELMO day... thus the attacker took personal insult and attacked. The mental illness was cause my insufficient blood flow due to extremely tight pants...

they should just hug it out and call it good!

Back in high school, I used to have a weird job working for a dodgy 'advertising company'. We used go to auto dealerships and blow up helium balloons and yes, dress up as cartoon characters. (Beats working at McDonalds). Occasionally people would come up to us and say weird things, throw things at us, or even strike us. One day I was working as a 'supervisor' and two kids in costume were shot with a paint-ball gun.

It's amazing to think that some people don't seem to realize that there is an actual person in that costume.

From a medical/physiological point of view I should point out that tight pants actually increase cerebral bloodflow, hence pressure-suits for high G-force enduring fighterpilots ;). Tight pants COULD cause severe blue-balls though, possibly accounting for a chronic severe irritability :D. Antidepressants can cause irritability and hypotension on the other hand so that might be it as well :p
