I've had a fair share of JP BFR's and and loved every single one.unfortunately i have a MAJOR problem in my apt with dry heat and have gone through a ton of Hepa filters for my humidifier and find myself even adding distilled water to my case humidifiers every other day to try to preserve the necks on the MM's i've had.so just to see what was out there to try to fix the problem of a shrinking neck,i started using a guitar with a Maple neck(non MM)which is better for my apt situation but i'm honestly NOT HAPPY unless a MM is in my hands and it's been a little while since i've owned one.
a couple of weeks ago john's wife's band played a gig(yeah i was a rodie for a night)unloaded johns truck with 2 Mesa cabs a RK head and 3 EBMM guitar case's???So i'm talking to john about the Black sugar Roasted neck and he says funny you should mention that...I have one right here!We finish unloading and he says check it out!!!
OMFG is all i can say!the setup was AMAZING and well yeah,i didn't stray far but I'm putting money together to buy a MM again.I don't know what i'll do about the heat problem and winter is right around the corner but if i have to change the water and filter evey hour/day I WILL.i'll see john again this month and wonder what he'll take out of the case next time..btw HE totally LOVES his Roasted Neck.:)

When I met John at NAMM this year and talked to him about the JPX he seemed really glad to talk about something other than "dude you are so awesome". I think JP is a knucklehead like the rest of us. (Only a lot more awesome) :D

I live in Minnesota = stupily dry winters.

I leave my guitars in their cases when not playing them then AND I put in a damp sponge inside a zip lock with holes in it inside the case. Check it daily to make sure teh sponge is damp. If not - re wet it. Works wonders!!!

I had wondered about the humidity in my apartment so I bought a little digital meter. It has been fine over summer but I'm guessing I'll need to do something over the winter to keep it from getting too dry. One thing you might try is putting a bowl or two of water on, or by, your heater. I had a teacher in elementary school that was apparently sensitive to low humidity. She just kept an aluminum pie dish filled with water on top of the heater. I've never had an individual case humidifier but it seems like it may be easier to just dump a cup of water in something from time to time. May make the apartment more comfortable for you as well.

New York gets hit pretty bad every winter, and steam heating is not that great. But to be honest with you guys, I havent had a SINGLE problem with any of my Balls for the past several winters. I keep them in their cases when not played. As a matter of fact they hold up better in the dry condition in the apartment than I do hahaha. This winter I will probably get a decent humidifier so that I will actually be more comfortable breathing and will help my Balls as well.

I guess it must be conditions indoors as I was surprised you live in NY Rich. I have only had problems with two unfinished necks that were Wolfgangs I had bought some years back that both oddly came from different guys in Arizona and arrived with fret sprout. When I received the first one my friend and tech just told me to let it adjust a few months before doing anything and in two months it was totally gone. I did the same thing some months later when I grabbed another that came with the same issue and had the same results, and never had this issue with any other of my guitars. From what I see on the web it is parts of the country where the climate is dry all year round that have recurring issues with this problem. Maybe you should try to store your guitars with unfinished necks in a different room in your place.

yes the problem is indoors.i have that Baseboard heating and it's plain horrendous,it dry's up everything,my plants as well need more water. Also i have hard water and when i use the Hepa filter in my 12 gallon humidifier i go through the filter's like candy and $15 a pop isn't cheap.
it's a Studio apt(just one big rm)and the thing that keeps me here is the fact that i can play as loud as i want when i want and you really just don't find that in the City.
As you mentioned about another room(which again i don't have,BUT maybe a Closet is better which i never tryed)...and i did ALWAYS keep them in the case.

Living in Colorado, fret sprout can be an issue here. In late winter (or whenever fret sprout is at its worst), just take the guitar to a tech and get the fret ends knocked down. If he does a good job, you'll not notice it when the fretboard plumps out ('cause you're only taking a few 10ths of a millimeter off) and the frets aren't likely to need more than one filing to deal with the issue permanently.

i only deal with 1 tech on Long Island he's worked on all my guitars and confirmed i basically have a problem.
on one of the guitars the problem was so bad you can see the glue coming through under the nut from the sides.
I don't know much about which woods take the heat better than the next but i did hear good things about vulcanized maple.maybe Sterling and Scott can consider making a neck of such woods for a 30 day option???;)

I live in Colorado too (Colo Sprngs) and I'm VERY hesitant to buy my first EBMM because of super dry weather conditions here. A roasted neck would probably be the solution to the problem, but I can't buy an EBMM just yet and by the time I can, the roasted neck option would be long gone.

I can understand the problem now Rich as baseboard heating would definitely have an affect, especially being in a studio apartment. I would believe that a non finished neck should have no problem if stored in a cool dark closet. The only slight drawback would be having to case it and put it away every night which should be no be inconvenience.I also believe roasted and vulcanized are pretty much a similar process.

thanks bro.if i have to put it into the closet every night i'd have no problem so i guess i'll give it a shot and get the rest of the funds then order another one.
