so i've been thinking about my playing lately and have thought about going the route of the AXIS...

would it be silly to trade or sell my 20th to get an axis?

Not if you really know for sure you prefer the Axis.....personally I'd try to find a way to keep both. You can always buy an Axis, you'll never be able to order another 20th

Depends really. The 20th is a great axe...however...not for me. That doesn't mean it is not a great guitar because it is...just did not feel right for me. Maybe the Axis is a better fit.

If YOU think a trade is worth it...then....go for it. Good luck.

I think that's crazy talk, unless you are 10000000% sure that the axis is more comfortable for you or fits your style better. I was considering the idea of parting with the 20th myself, but I dont think that's possible...unless something comes along that fits me better. What's the reason behind this though? Not comfortable enough to play? Tone?

from the replies it sounds like i should keep my 20th and stop the crazy talk and if i'm that set on getting an Axis just buy it and call it good. I've always liked the AXIS - was what really drew me into the EBMM world back in the day. I love the 20th all the way around... just thinking tonally different right now... maybe i'll drop in some pickups and change it up that way for now and if i'm not getting alrong with it- simply buy an AXIS.

Any thoughts for pickups considering my thoughts towards an AXIS...

That's what I thought that the issue might be. You dont need to sell a brilliant guitar because the pickups aren't your cup of tea hehe. As a matter of fact, I'm going to change the pickups in mine ONCE again. I like the stock pickups, but I really need more crunch from the bridge. I think I will be going with AT1 and Air Norton combo. I had the Air Norton in it before, and that's just an overall great pickup. I also had an EVO2 in there, but found myself rolling down the tone a bit because it had a bit too much highs for my taste. Steve's Special was pretty decent, but not enough mids...that pickup is specifically designed like that and I had it lying around so I just threw it in there haha.

Peter hold onto the 20th is my advice.Have you ever tried the 25th or new reflex model, its has a similiar neck as the axis and is more flexible tone wise with the pickup configuration.

BP-
thanks for the advice. I really do love my 20th and would hate to part with it there's something about "THAT ONE" that just works for me on all levels. I love the pickups but looking for a little bit more of something... haven't figured it out quite yet... and the tones i hear from the AXIS is just workin for me so it was a thought...

i've heard a lot of guys suggest over the years changing out the pickups and experimenting that route (obviously keeping the originals) so i might go that route and try to get as close to the AXIS pickups that i can get and try that first just so i don't loose a rare gem in the process.

Yea man, definitely nothing wrong with changing the pups to see how you like the difference. Plus its not an irreversible mod. I'm telling you, if you throw in some hotter pups in there, its a totally different monster. However the tone woods used and the construction of the guitar itself influences the overall tone immensely in a good way. I'm thinking of putting in some creme zebras, to have an appearance like the Axis :). I did a really quick mock-up in paint...I'm no browndog and dont have time for those shinanigans.

I have seen folks adding different pickups to their 20th... has anyone converted the electronics to include a 5 way switch like the ASS/2H Albert Lee?

Personally, I think it would be crazy to let go of a 20th, it is such a great player.

How would the 5 way switch work if you have a 3 way toggle hole? I'm thinking of adding a push-pull tone pot for series/parallel options for the 3 way switch. I would love to have a 5 way switch on it though, since I really like the ASS and HH AL pup combinations.

Yeah, that's what I'm asking.

Does the push-pull pot give you the same combinations that you would achieve with a 5-way?

Do it Pete, you’ll love the Axis. Changing the strings may take an extra 5 minutes. To me, thats the only drawback to the Floyd.

Lets make a deal. You buy a Reflex and ship it to me for my Axis.

I would follow BP's advice. 20th is rare and discontinued, Axis is immortal so you have plenty of time to try it :)
