A good friend and former drummer in one of my bands asked me to contribute a bassline for one of the tracks for his solo cd to come out in early 2011.

My session was yesterday, I got a pre production of the song via Email on Sunday. It is was a very slow and dark hardrock number in the likes of early black sabbath.

I brought the bfr Stingray 5 and some other bass which does not matter because it did not get out of the gigbag.

The Stingray was recorded through an old Dynacord tube amp from the 60ies, pushed into saturation and a double miced 4x10 cab. We had three takes, one with position 1 on the selector switch, one with position 4 and another one in position 2. We wanted an authentic big rocktone with some dirt and got that pretty well out of the bass.

The sound guy complimented the sound of the bass as one of the best he ever recorded, especially for the strong and clear sound of the b-string.

When we were almost through and just had to do the a drumbreak at the end of the song, I had the idea of using a big muff to add some more dirt with position 4. Holy sh*t, it sounded awesome.

After that we did one more take of the whole song with the muff that went without editing. Everyone was happy. I will put up a link to the song when it is ready.

The rosewood Stingrays are killer basses! I am very happy to have one!:)

Cool, cant wait to hear the song:)

Edit: Oh, and if I ever got to record a bass line four times it would be because i effed up the first three times haha, and I'd probably get fired too lol

Since I was not payed I luckily had no risk of getting fired.:D

The song should be ready and mixed around Christmas. I may appear on another track too.

I already sent a Email to get a roughmix as soon as the guitars are done. By now we just have bass and drums recorded and some synthie preproduction that is not meant to be published. I am excited too.

It actually did not take that long to record the bass. I made two little overdubs. The nice thing was that the line was more or less up to me and we worked the final version out right before we recorded it. By now no one knows what the song will really sound like in the end, since he said something about strings too.

Uzi (the drummer'*s nick) takes a lot of time for this project and many players from his former and present bands contribute to the album. Since the Studio belongs to a friend, it is not a question of money.

Funny, how they generally frown upon anything else than a Fender P or J, or maybe a Ric, but then are surprised how good other good quality instruments sound right "out of the box".

We had another session because they wanted me for two more songs. For one of them, a rather mellow, Pink Floyd like instrumental, I used the Bongo 5.

This time it was a first takes. Everybody loved the tone of the Bongo. We did not record it the same way as the Stingray, but via a Neve channel strip directly into the desk. I will post something when I get the mix.

Those Bongos record beautifully...

I can't wait for it. I liked the first one you posted, very dark early 80's Metal like. Very Cool!

Glad to hear that! :)

Interesting Thread cellkirk74!

Just these days I'm going to one private home recording studio to play a few bass lines for one domestic progressive rock band! This job shall be paid properly of course, and those guys are counting with me for some live gigs too! :)
I admit that I'm very excited, but worried too, because last time when I was in studio, I was around 20! :D

I don't have whole RW necked Music Man like You  , I'll just take my Sterling 5 HS with fresh restrung setup!
Only if incoming reflex (on oder) arrives these days, I'll take it into the studio?

I wish You a many more good studio recordings with Your EBMM collection! ;)

P.S. ...don't wanna ruin Your Thread, so I'll make my own when time comes, no hard feelings!
