When I was young (~ 4 years old), I had two favourite records: Sergeant Pepper's LHCB and Rolled Gold (2 disc Best Of by the Rolling Stones).
I can say that the Beatles have been one of my biggest musical influences. AND - of course - it is amazing what they pumped out in 7 years. Might be interesting where they would have gone if they had stuck together for a longer time ...

I guess the seven year thing doesnt resonate...it was like time lapse photography....

Look at beatle boots Look at the whole peace movement ....they progressed at light speed and brought social change like no others.

That's what I was thinking about when I said they changed not just music - they changed everything. We all wanted to dress like them, most of us could, by 65 or so, do a passable Liverpool accent and we all grew our hair long (mine didn't work so well until Hendrix came along, then I was cool).

They changed the culture. They changed the world. They changed EVERYTHING. The timeframe in which it all happened was lightning fast, but for people my age, it began to seem like we'd always had the Beatles - and we always would. Don't you think, BP? They would never stop doing what they were doing!

When I saw "Let It Be" in the theater, I knew things were never going to be the same.

Strawberry fields forever! I use to run sound for wild moshpit type of shows and when the headliner would finish I would put on Strawberry fields and everyone would leave on a happy peaceful note. The first record I owned was a 45 called Help. I have been hooked since! Great band but McCartney has sure turned into an ass.

When I was younger, I didn't appreciate The Beatles as much as I do now. In my opinion, every bass player should learn as many James Jamerson and Sir Paul basslines as possible.

I adore all of their albums, but I think my favorite is probably The White Album and then maybe Sgt. Pepper...with Revolver/Abbey Road close behind.

Really? Never met him personally but I do know three or four people who have had dealings with him and everyone says the same thing, which is pretty much exactly the opposite of what you wrote.

OK Before spouting about someone you have never met on an international forum...Ill bgive you my two cents worth...

Paul Mc Cartney most chirstmases sends us a bottle of champagne. The only other artist to do that is Buddy Guy.

Paul Mc Cartney has met me back stage...unlike =most artists who give you backstage and then you get a warm diet coke and maybe meet the roadies...Paul Mc Cartney remembered my wifes name.

I find him to be a first calss person. I actually know him so please weigh my popinion a little higher.

Even from just seeing him in interviews, Paul seems like a true gent, and always seems flattered with the response he and his songs/band songs get. Its almost as if he doesnt regsiter quite the magnitude that his songs have made on the world.

A true songwriter....and some sweet bassline.

He also wears Converse with a suit in some pics, which is cool!

I've heard he's all class too, but that may be with CEO's, like yourself, other artists, or people higher on the food chain, so to speak. The everyday fan, as annoying as some can be, may not get the same warm response.
I guess after almost 50 years of people asking for your autograph, it would get annoying, but that comes with the territory, especially if you're one of the. surviving Beatles.

Actually, the three or four people that I know who have met him said he treated them like family and was genuinely as nice as can be. One was a caterer, one was a cop, one was a pr rep--not exactly CEOs, artists, or titans of industry.

I am basing my opinion on his recent appearance at the White House. There he is on stage talking smack about one of our presidents. That isn't cool! Would you go to vist the queen of england and talk bad about her predecessor? I liked him up until then.

That is pretty cool. My favorite Beatle always changes but I gotta say, I really feel the love when donning my John Lennon "Strawberry Fields" edition eyewear...

Love the Beatles.

But I don't quite understand the obsession with iTunes. Were the Beatles unavailable prior to iTunes? Nobody could hear them on Vinyl? 8-track? Cassette? CD? DVD? The radio? It seems like a band doesn't exist unless it is on iTunes.

The Beatles are fantastic. I just don't undstand how being on iTunes is particularly important.

I love this thread. The Beatles are still a great influence on kids today - the band my son plays in are all around 20 yrs old but they have 3 or 4 Beatles songs off and on in the set, he's bought all the albums on CD, and dips in to them to learn on bass and also guitar.

Paul had the best Bass Lines ever. Still I'm so Glad he never learned to Slap.
WE ALL LOVE THE BEATLES.

+1 - not sure on the slap though - on the Prince's Trust concert back in the mid 80s Paul McCartney and Mark King (who played on quite a lot of the songs at the gig) were both on the stage at the end of the concert and he can be seen talking to Mark King and making hand gestures like ...........man you must show me how to do that!!..well I think that's what he was meaning!

I've also heard him say in interviews he was influenced by Jamerson (although only knew him as the guy on the Tamla records). For me the bass parts on songs like Come Together and Something in the Way She Moves are just amazing.

I'd never realised just how good some of those early songs are until recently.

there's an urban legend in Tucson about Paul stopping on Reddington Rd to offer assistance to a motorist with a flat. Sure, it was just to offer his cellphone to call the motor club but still, he could have kept right on driving.

I didn't think the iTunes announcement was all that tremendous but cool to see the Beatles still in that much demand 40 years after they split up.

you got it the wrong way around. The importance is that iTunes has "finally" arrived by snagging the Beatles.

Love the Beatles! I can't tell you how lucky I feel that I grew up in a house with great music around. When I was a little kid in the 70's, most of my friends parents were pretty square and didn't listen to the stuff I got to hear daily. Beatles, Wings, Stones, Hendrix, Eagles, Joan Armatrading, Delbert McClinton, Bonnie Raitt (my first concert!), yada yada. And I do the same with my kids now. In fact, my 12 year old son always picks the music when I drive him to school in the morning. He chose the White Album this morning. :)

It's funny how Paul's bass lines were often so simple, yet difficult to learn (for me, anyway). I could bang out most rock band's bass lines, but Beatles lines were always harder for me, and sometimes still are.

I have everything Beatles ever recorded on vinyl and cd. I was three years old when they broke up but I still got hooked big time. GREAT band, great songwriters and splendid musicians. I have two friends that have met both Ringo and Paul on several occations. Friendliest lands ever, he said. Lots of respect for those lads. Best band ever. And George Martin. What a genius!
