I'm a newbie here. I've owned two Alberts in the past, sold them 'cause I needed the scratch.(regrets) Now I'm looking at the HH models-the rosewood necks look awesome. Question is this; are all the pickup selections humbucking? I play in a show band in big venues and I need quiet. I love single coils, but they can be really noisy live as we all know.
The clean sound samples on youtube sound great; almost single-coil tone.
Thanks for your response on this.

The HH AL works with a 5 way switch similar to the Axis SS
You get neck bucker, inner coils of eachpup, both buckers, outer coils of each and then bridge bucker. It gives you a great variety of sounds as configured. There is no single split on its own but the 2/4 positions sound fantastic with just one coil from each.

This should be the switching options with the 5-way switch.

Pos.1 = bridge pickup (both coils)
Pos.2 = outer coils of bridge and neck pickup
Pos.3 = both pickups (both coils of both pickups)
Pos.4 = inner coils of bridge and neck pickup
Pos.5 = neck pickup (both coils)

You cannot get one coil alone. Positions 2 & 4 split the HBs either inner or outer coils together. I have the 25th Annv and the switching does provide for near single coil tones.

To throw a wrench or 2 into your decision.....the SSS Als have a silent circuit, so if you have had older Als without that in the past, you can still consider the SSS version.

With the HH, you've got 2 pots, so there's always the option of push-pull pots to allow single coil only options for each humbucker.

Play them back to back if you can. They are both just about the best there is out there. They are very different from each other, but equally awesome, in my opinion.

To answer the question posted by the OP: yes, all the positions on the Axis SS are humbucking, including both of the split-coil positions. They do have a single-coil vibe to them, and they are lower in output than the full humbucking positions and thus will drive an amp less. In a live environment, they are very useful.

Yes you can get clean tones from the splits on an HH AL, or try an MM-90 awesome stuff!

Yeah bro, the MM90 models have my total attention too. You know, these really are genius guitar designs the AL/MM connection. They look like George Jetson had a kid with Leo Fender!! After owning 2 AL's in the '90's I"m ready to try the HH and see what gives. I'll consider the MM90 too as a "second" indulgence.
Thanks for all the help clarifying this for me!!

Dude you should see if you can hunt down one of the Black Sugar/Roasted Maple Neck AL HH models.

This is one of BrownDogs Mock ups, but I think it gets the point across. :)

I would say just go for it as stated above their are no single coil settings though you can pull out a bit of a single coil vibe on certain settings. But with the Mahogany body and RW neck the humbuckers have a bit of a darker tone than if it was basswood with a maple cap. This guitar would get my vote for Ball of the year as it is hotter than a firecracker, and also come in some great colors.
