Wow, sorry to hear about the tuner. Nobody performing for an audience should ever get that drunk IMO. It's simply unprofessional, but I know you already knew that.

Movielife, the bass was on a stand right next to my amp. Even though we're a paid band, the places we play aren't really dumps lol. We've never had a problem with any audience members, and the bar staff takes good care of us. I bring 2 basses to each show. I use my 5 string for standard and drop d songs, and my four for all drop c songs. We don't hardly ever practice, but when we do we rent out a spot for a day at a place down here that is made for band rehearsals, and it is climate controlled and nice. I always bring my basses home with me, but because my amp is to big for my car I leave it in the band trailer.
Oli, the other two basses are by far less expensive than the Stingray, and I'm not as worried about them. That doesn't mean I wouldn't be upset if something happened to them, but they are purely working basses. The Cherryburst is a dream bass of mine, and I plan on keeping it forever. Thats why I'm not going to be using it as much live anymore. As far as the band thing goes, my original band did dissolve away back in June. My brother, who was the lead guitarist, moved back home and we had a hard time finding a replacement. The singer decided to quit to his life back in order, and instead of trying to start all over, me and the drummer just called it quits. I was going to take a break to concentrate on school because I had just started taking night classes at the local technical college ( which I just finished taking all of my final exams and passed as of yesterday
). I got a call from my drummer of the originals band in September, he was playing for a cover band that needed a bass player ASAP. I had to learn 40 songs in one week, and do a "live" audition, meaning play their next show. They asked me to join that night and I've been playing with them ever since. I miss the originals band a lot, but I don't miss the headache that came with it. This band is booked solid until next October, so all I do is show up, play, get paid and go home. About the only thing I miss from the originals band was opening for all of the national acts we got to open for.
Josh I appreciate it, but I'm just about to order the part and a new pickguard since the one on it is looking pretty rough lol. I'll pass on borrowing your ray, don't want to mess it up lol. I'm playing my other 4 string at the shows. I haven't showed it any attention since I got my stingray, so it's doing it some good to take it out and play it. Once I get my parts in for my ray, I'm going to give it a thorough cleaning, and re-sand the neck. She's seen a lot of action over the last 2 years and deserves a little break. Yall staying in town for Christmas or leaving? We're off Christmas eve, but we're playing Christmas night, so I decided to stay in town.

Sounds like if this guy wants to drink during gigs, you should make him wear one of those child leashes - a short one ... & nail it to the stage floor.

From a performance perspective I'm not sure I would have stopped mid-set to see if the bass was ok, but on the drunk singer bit I sympathize with you.

Well, it was during our 2nd set and we only had three more songs to go. We had another set to do, so we just added them onto it. I got no complaints from anyone in the band about it, they were all pretty understandable about how I felt. We're playing tomorrow night at the same venue so we'll see how it goes...

Jimmy... I say you keep with them till you have enough $ saved to get the White Reflex 5HH you want. Then Overdrive it out of this band and start looking for another original gig. I wouldn't want you to become Numb to non-musical commitments. PM me with whatever shows you are playing the week of the 27th. I will be back in town and have some nights off from work. JOSH

Get some chain link fence (or at least some cheap snow fence) and make a little enclosure for the bass and its stand. Set it up on stage for all to see. Maybe put a "Trespassers will be shot" sign on it.
It'd give everyone in the band as well as the repeat customers a good laugh and send a message to your singer at the same time….

Just about everybody has done something stupid on stage. Especially the drunk part. Hopefully in high school. As a guy who doesnt drink anymore..(my choice btw...I just woke up 4 years ago and said 'done") I have zero tolerance for an adult who does it. It seems that the older we all get the fewer of our peers can drink very well.

I agree. Getting intoxicated gets more painful as we get older. While I still enjoy my single malts, I have not been drunk in 15 years at least.
I am also pleased that my teenager does not abuse alcohol or take drugs. I recall that when he had to do a report on alcohol in elementary school, he originally wrote about how bad it is. I actually discussed with him the things I like about red wine, beer, and scotch. I described the history of wine making, different regions in Scotland that make Scotch etc. So he had a balanced perspective. He wrote about both the evils, but also the history. I truly believe that helped change his perspective and give him a responsible view on alcohol.
Growing up, I found that my friends whose parents either didn't consume alcohol at all or only had large quantities of cheap beer in the house were more likely to get wasted on the weekend. My European parents drank responsibly and modeled proper attitude for me.

As far as drinking goes, I'm not one judge anyone who drinks, as long as they do it responsibly. I too have zero tolerance for drunk adults, and even less for younger adults. I do enjoy the taste of beer, especially with certain foods, and from time to time, a good scotch or whiskey drink hits the spot. Just as BP said, just about everyone does something stupid on stage, and I've had my fair share of those moments. I buy my instruments to play and gig with, and I know that eventually something could happen to them, its just the nature of this business. I'll start playing my Stingray back on stage again soon, I didn't buy it to be wall decor. Were playing tonight at the place where this happened last week, and oddly enough the bar is called Rehab lol. I like all the guys in this band, we get along really good, and have a fun time playing with them. I'm not going to let one bad moment ruin my vibe, and be extremely cautious of everything going on while were playing. If I do that, then playing out won't be any fun anymore. If I ever get to that point, then I don't need to play bass anymore.

Ive been drunk on stage and not enjoyed it. Im 29 now, and I realise one swift one before is enough, if that. I want to play well and look after my gear.
Once you have a few, then get onstage, you tend to let go and forget how easily accidents can happen.
So yep, the drinking before gigs has ended for me. I get so much excitement from playing live I dont need anything else.

Every place I play is a bar. Band setup is early. I drink until gig time. I am not leaving my equipment in a bar for 5 hours before a gig.
I learned to play drunk so there is a positive thing to say for gigging drunk.
I have never tore anything up at a gig.
But I have seen plenty of others that couldn't handle the drink screwing up.

I run our covers band pretty tight and there is two rules
1 dont turn up to a rehearsal not knowing a song
2 turn up drunk and it's you last gig.
There is nothing worse than putting a few new songs in the set and when you get to the rehearsal someone asks " what are the chords " if it happens I switch everything off and go home.
And I have a complete ban on beer at gigs. When the show is over you can drink as much as you want and I will drive you home put you to bed and give you a kiss goodnight ! But not one drop before a gig.
Nearly all our gigs are hotel weddings and corporate stuff and the money is damn good and needs to be repected as a job not a piss up.
However when we do play a pub gig it's a bit more relaxed and one or two beers is cool as long as it's one or two.
I get paid more for one night than I do all week in work and no drunk is going to put that at risk

I think that puts the above into perspective... that'd make me a tough patron as well. Great to see that some of you are making real money with playing music. Well done!

Anyone I have played with agrees I sound better drunk LOL. Some folks can't handle their drinks and some can.
How many musicians have preformed on coke? Heroin? LOL
Not condoning anything. Just saying how it is when I play with some rather good musicians.
