Well I have owned this guitar for almost two months and it was mint but yesterday my wife decided that my blinds in my office needed to be opened and when she went to open them tripped on my guitar cord (I know I'm an idiot for not having it in the case) and my EVH went down. Well there were absolutely no dings anywhere but upon further inspection there is a couple of cracks at the top of the neck in the area where the Floyd lock nut holes are. My question is can this be repaired or will it be fine? I played it and it seems OK but I'm just concerned if I was to put a slightly heavier gauge string on it if it would make it worse. I'm guessing that I just can't buy a new EVH signature neck for it but I was curious if there is anything that can be done to repair it.

Here are some pics from my phone, hopefully they are clear enough to show the damage.

looks like stress cracks in the clear coat. No cracks are on the unsealed area from what I can see.

Yea, usually cracks will happen along the grain like that right? I think he got lucky and only suffered finish cracks. Lets hope anyways. I cringed looking at those photos at first.

you can always call customer service and inquire about repairs and possibly a new neck if it turns out you need one.

First question: why does your wife decide if your blinds need to be opened?? Now, with that out of the way - yes, I agree with Colin on the extent of damage.

However, even if they were more serious, yes, even then the neck could be repaired, and if done professionally would stay in tune etc. . . as well as before.

I'd take a wait and see approach as some suggest, but I would use every waking moment to remind my wife about this.

Remember. For Better or Worse. But, I say there are lines ! And the Line was Crossed! :) I feel for you. Finding an EVH neck would be almost impossible. If you did have to swap it out with CS, It would probably with an Axis neck. I would go for the repair. It looks to be only stress cracks. Good Luck.

Thanks, I figured that it would be impossible to get the neck replaced since it is an EVH which isn't made anymore. Hopefully they are just stress cracks but I should get it checked out just in case.

Does anyone know anywhere in Southern California that does good repair work?

As stated before, I think you may have dodged a bullet on this one. Looks like finish cracks. There may be some underlying damage to the wood which could weaken the headstock, but there's really no way of knowing unless the cracks start separating.

I don't think there's really alot of repairing you can do to it at this point. I think it would actually have to be broken apart for you to get the glue where you need it to make a structural repair to the headstock effective. The only thing you could really do now is fix the finish cracks.

I'd say just keep an eye on it, and watch for separation at the cracks. I would also advise being as careful as possible with it from now on. Even if it is just finish cracks, that particular spot will probably be weakened from now on.

dwntwn I really feel for you my friend, but I agree with the guys after looking really close to the damage they all seem like finish cracks. This is the rare case where I would say what happened is no badge of honor or any adding of charectar, and you would have almost even odds of hitting the lottery as finding an EVH neck for sale. On the bright side I do not think you will have any issues or a chance of the neck actually breaking though I advise you bring it to a good tech or call CS to see if they can do the repair as the finish cracks will more than likely spread over time if not taken care of.

Now when you go home walk in the door really depressed and look at the EVH listings on ebay, and say what a nice anniversary present one would make.

Yeah, I'd say now is the time to hit your wife up for another EBMM EVH. They are actually pretty reasonably priced on Ebay right now, probably for the last time. I think the combination of the economy, and people letting some of their EBMM collection go to pick up "that other" signature guitar has put more EBMM EVHs on the market.

I would not get rid of the one you have though. Make note of when the finish cracks happened though. Years down the road, if you ever do decide to sell it, you can point to the pictures and the date to show that no further damage has occurred as a result of the accident over the years. This might give the buyer some reassurance that the guitar is okay, and you may get a better price for it.

The first thing I did after I found the cracks was go on eBay to look for another EVH and there were only 3 of them listed.

give EBMM customer service a call... who knows what they will do with an EVH neck. Maybe they can replace it... I'm sure its not cheap though.

Thanks, I will check with them after I take it to a luthier (guitardoctor.net) here in So. Cal to see what they say about it.
