Hi, I'm looking at purchasing a Sterling for $800 where the owner states: "RRP was $3500 back in 2002 and this was when the Sterlings were a premium version of a stingray". Can you let me know if the statement is true? I have attached a picture of the neck. Thanks.

No, that's a completely ridiculous statement and couldn't be further from the truth. $800 is, however, a common fair price for a used Sterling.

Dirk,

$800 is a very fair price for a USED Sterling. I don't think Bassmonkee meant that you should look elsewhere, but that the seller was exhagerating on the MSRP.

Thanks, I should have clarified that I understood Bassmonkee's reply, it's just I could get a new Stirling here in Australia for about $1100, or a used SUB for $900. Some used Stingrays are going used for $1100-$1300. So I don't think a used Sterling at $800 is what I'd go for. Actually, I would be interested what people would buy out of those three options I mentioned there.

That doesn't sound right. Make sure you are not confusing "Sterling by Musicman" with "Musicman Sterling".

By the way, the Sterling is not a premium version ofthe Stingray, but a different bass, with a smaller body, thinner neck and a different pickup. But 800 is a fair price if it is a Ernie Ball Music Man Sterling (not to be confused with "Sterling by Music Man"= new budget line, not us-made).

OK, so which would be the best bet:
used Sterling - made in USA - (couple of small chips) for $850
used Stingray for $1250
used Sub for $950
Thanks people.

Dirk - the difference between a Sterling and a stingray would be your own taste. Some people prefer the thinner neck and smaller body size of a Sterling. Big question is - Where are these basses for sale? Those are very good prices if the basses are already in Oz. If they are not, shipping will be expensive and you will be subject to your GST if the bass and shipping combines to more than $1000 Aus.

Thanks for that info on the difference between the two. I would probably prefer a bigger body and neck, hence Stingray. All the prices I quoted before included shipping - they are all available here in Australia. The Stingray is actually available here in my hometown Melbourne.
I guess from your answer that you are not even considering the SUB against the other two?

As others have mentioned, the Sterling is not an "upgrade" to a Stingray but rather a different model (with the differences already noted). The price on that used Sterling is excellent, akin to used prices in the US. If you have a chance to play it, you might find it more than acceptable!

I wouldn't ignore SUBs for any reason although (in the US) the price on that one seems high. Maybe not there.

To clarify, RRP is "Recommended Retail Price", the equivalent in Australia to what is known in the USA as "list price" or "MSRP".

And it is true that as recently as a year or two ago, the RRP for Musicman basses in Australia was in fact well over AUD$3000. The strong AUD (and weak USD) over the past 12 months has brought store pricing down to closer to $2000 (the AUD has strengthened from around US0.65 to 1.04 at the moment.

That's why any of you guys who are selling used basses shouldn't be shy about making your sale available to international buyers. We currently have great buying power for items that are priced in USD.

I get several "pained voices" from overseas everytime I sell a bass. Some people will do nearly anything to get their hands on a MADEINUSA. Guess it helps you realize how good we have it, instrument-wise (no politics here) in the Good old USofA.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for all your advice. I definitely have a better idea of what to purchase now, and what to pay.

Strangely enough, although I am forty years old and work in computer-related services, I have never posted anything on a forum until now. Just wondering whether myself or someone else should shut this thread? As the originator of this discussion who now has been "satisfied" should I close it so that it does not clog up the "live" chats?

Nah, we let threads die natural deaths around here, with the occassional stake through the heart when needed.

Besides, we hope you'll stick around. You don't seem insane. We like that.

Make sure you post pictures of the bass when you get it. We like pictures and we won't believe the bass exists until we see it. I never said we weren't insane. :D
