hi forumites,
as you know, i got this beautiful axis ss rosewood two weeks ago and i really like the feel and natural sound of the guitar.
but what i hear playing the guitar through an amp isn´t what the guitar sounds unplug.
so my guess is, that the OEM dimarzios work well with the EVH and the regular Axis but aren´t the best match for a rosewood axis.

does anybody change the PUPs on his rosewood axis?
and if so, which PUP did you put in and how does it sound?
(i know that "sounds" are hard to describe)

Try Dimarzio Norton (bridge) and Air Norton (neck). I put these in my AL-MM90-converted-to-HH and am so pleased, that I will exchange pups in my ASS as well, maybe next week.
The Norton bridge pup is more open sounding, which feels better to me for clean an crunch. Also it has a "aw"-vowel-tone to it, like a good cross between Slash and Eddie van Halen.
The Air Norton neck is pretty close to the custom Dimarzio, but also a little more open and more vintagey, VERY transparent, especially in bass, yet overall thick feel. I once had a Virtual PAF in the neck position, which to me lacked the thickness of the custom DiMarzio. The Air Norton fit very well!

Before you try new pickups, you could try to bypass the tone pot. I think the original pickups sound better this way and were designed to be run that way. Couldn't hurt.

I think Lawdaddy did swap pups for PAF36 he wrote a couple of threads about that

I confirm i swap on my old Axis for DI MARZIO PAF36
they fit perfectly and now i've 3 splited position also with a push pull pot
the sound is not so different than stock pickup (which are the best pickups)

ily, you mean i should keep playing with the stock ones?
to me the bridge PUP is a bit too bright and the neck a bit to dark.
maybe removing the tone-pot will open up the neck, but for the bridge i would prefer to turn down the tone-pot a bit....

DI MARZIO are a little more bright and it's the reason that i think that the stock pickups
are better it's my own case i've replace them because theye are too old and no splittable
on my second axis super sport i'll never replace stock PU

i would try to bypass tone control but your neck PUP will be more bright

also try to have special setup on your amplifier

i´ll do some more testing the next weeks, with unsoldering the tone-pot and maybe i´ll find a solution without changing PUPs.
i never changed the stock PUPs on a EBMM except on the BFR JP, but i only did the update to CL/LF.
but i will not change my amp settings because they work well with all my other guitars. :)
