Went to the World Barbecue Championship in Gronau, Germany yesterday on a whim. And what an AWESOME party it was! 88 teams from all over the world, even a team from Congo. The competition itself is today, yesterday was a kind of warm-up where you got to taste all kinds of EXCELLENT food. Had bbq-smoked sturgeon for the first time for example from a very friendly Polish fellow.

There were bbq's the size of a truck there. One team had a insanely big Mack truck with a bbq the size of a ballistic missile on the back. Saw a big block V8 converted to a bbq and a little Fiat 500 car they turned into a smoking chamber :). Hung out with a totally cool team of Norwegians that stayed at my uncle's hotel and had a blast. Beer, deer, pig and beef galore. Got some really nice tips on how to marinate the hickory woodchips with apple-juice and whiskey too. Glad the summer is coming cause I got the BBQ-bug real bad. Soo many tasty new ideas to treat dead animals :D

I was silently hoping to see a Big Poppa's Smokers team but alas :). If anyone is in the neighborhood I can totally recommend going today, really fantastic atmosphere. All the teams are very friendly and willing to share meat/beer/secrets and there are bands playing everywhere :)

I'll be on vacation in Germany in July. I doubt I'll make it to any barbecue events, but I see some beer gardens in my future.

I sincerely vow I've never had a bad German-made beer. They know what to drink and they know how to cook :)

I don't want to start a new war with my German friends ... but the best beer is made in Belgium !!!
When I will be fed up with my life, I will become monk in a Trappist monastery somewhere in Belgium ...

I wouldn't mind going to Germany or Belgium and trying a stein or two. I'm pretty partial to Guiness
