Ive been snooping around these forums but never actually thought of signing up till today.

I have a ebmm ASS and its amazing! I wanted a more high gain tone so i switched the bridge with a crunch lab. One thing i realized was that the crunch lab is almost twice as fat as the axis pickup and now the pickup is only about 1mm away from the strings. I wanna switch back to the axis bridge but i traded it with a crunch lab.

Anyone ever tried putting a crunch lab on an axis? Did you guys route the body to acommodate the pickup height? What should i do? Anyone got a spare axis pickup laying around? Is the tone zone as thick as the axis pu? Help!:(

The Axis bridge pickup is the holy grail, so you'll have to pay a premium to find another. Maybe someone else can chime in on the routing or pickup height.

Poderoso sorry to hear about your issues and hope you sought them out. This is the last time I will ever write this in any forum but it is good advice- if you are going to spend a good amount of scratch on a pro level guitar and want to swap the pups, do yourself a favor and just hold onto them, especially if the originals are not easy to come by. In this case though once you hit it with a router nothing really matters anymore!

Ok, well the pickup is gone. You can keep an eye out for a used one on CL or eBay, but that'll likely be a while. (Took me years to find a spare set.)

If it were me, I wouldn't route unless I was sure this is what I wanted. Sounds like it's more of an experiment for you. In that case you're going to affect the resale for no good reason.

Lots of great bridge pickups that are the same size. I'd start by emailing Dimarzio. They made the original pickups so can steer you in the right direction.

Hiya fella.

The Tone Zone (DP155F) is the same height as the original pickup. Both the D Sonic and Crunch Lab are around 2.6mm taller, and will give the exact result you have found.

You could get the body routed for the Crunch Lab, but you are then modding the body for that height of pickup. You would end up having to pack up any 'shorter' pickup if you change back, in the future.

If you are set on the Crunch Lab (and it is a cool mod), then you could mod the pickup baseplate by fashioning up new lugs/mount from the existing material. Can be done, but needs some clever work. This does keep the body unchanged.

As beej has said, contact DiMarzio; they are really helpful and happy to discuss pickup choice. They can supply you with a spec sheet that identifies the standard and taller height pickups.

Hope that helps. The Tone Zone is an easy and appropriate fix to the problem, though. :)

Ernie Ball MusicMan Axis EVH Pickups * Van Halen * | eBay

A pair just sold on ebay for a pretty steep price.

I'll make you a deal. If you find me a purple Axis Hardtail (NOT super sport) or EVH Hardtail (that I can afford) and I end up buying it because of you, I'll GIVE you an Axis bridge pickup.

I scour the internets everyday, but two sets of eyes are better than one.
