BFR F1 vs "OLD" JP6

Hey,

I want to ask you about the differences in the sound of those guitars. I mean the change of wood will definitely affect the guitar voicing. I want to ask someone who has both guitars to record some samples on the clean channel on the amp with the same setting for both guitars. That will give a clue about the tone to other musicians who are thinking which model should they finally pick.

I was honestly surprised in the differences in sound between my JP Mystic Dream and JP BFR in Bahama Blue Burst. I thought the regular JP sounded fantastic.

(this is all about the BFR):

Notes sustain more
tone is more harmonic
richer and darker, while ironically sounding brighter at the same time
more 3d (complex chords and notes sing without drowning each other out)
more emphasis on bass

I'm not much of a "clean" player, but i will try and get some clips up showing the difference - with my gear and fingers.

Don't even get me started on all the other ways the BFR is better to me. It's worth the extra $$$ for sure.

Oh that would be great! I'll wait for the samples from you. You don't have to play too much, just play a G chord through all strings and that would be enough I'm really excited to hear that difference. I live in Poland and it's really hard to hear even "old' JP so there is not a chance to confront it with BFR!

PS. Your Bahama Blue in the display picture is fantastic, you should post somewhere full size picture so I can grab it and use it as a wallpaper

I made the same post a few months ago. They all said that the BFR was a better choice. But, the regular JP was still amazing too. I still can't decide.

sorry to bring out an old thread but i cant help thinking about this, that my regular jp sustains more than my bfr .. its more.. err singing? i dont know why.. cant figure out why.. but true about the voicing and clarity being better.. just my sustain is affected .. on the same rig, same patch.. thoughts anyone?

OT: Was the BFR ever officially called the 'F1'? I thought this was just a nickname Petrucci had for his original BFR... I love how he says 'fast and easy to drive'; I get what he means but from what I gather, F1 ain't easy to drive haha.

Just chance really. Maybe your JP was made of a particularly resonant piece of basswood? There can be a fair bit of variation between guitars, just because wood is a natural material. I guess thats why Mr. Morse has his No. 1 rather than using any old guitar.

just to update, that i have no issues with the BFR anymore, after a few tweaks..
