Why hello there, my fellow formite friends, I need to tell you a tale of a very, very naughty Axis named Frankensugar. Some of you may recall my excitement when I first received her in the mail from Guitar Center several months ago:

She was a Black Sugar Axis with a chrome Music Man Gotoh Floyd Rose. Oh, and did I mention her roasted maple neck and ebony fretboard???

I was quick to adorn her with a feau-cheetah Malmsteen strap, and she had just the attitude I was after. Flashy and cocky, yet somehow civilized. Maybe it's the sparkle of the Black Sugar finish or the dark roasted coffee-beanness of the neck, but she would fit nicely in a jazz trio. But, oh no, not for long...

You see, it was once that I plugged her into my all-tube Gibson Super Goldtone half-stack, set on double dirty, that I soon realized just how dark she was. She, as yet unnamed, was just another beautiful and superbly crafted Axis. Perfect in every detail, as expected and indeed appreciated. But once I played my first notes I realized that her characteristics were bringing a much darker tone to the table than her Axis siblings. She was dark, and oh so rich and toneful...I am still in love with her just as much!

It was in appreciating her darkness, both in tone and appearance, that I noticed just how shiny the chrome Floyd Rose was. I fancied a black one in it's place, and that very moment I knew she was destined to be modified to perfection. She was to be my Black Sugar Frankenstein, my Frankensugar...

I researched my options, and Gohoh looked good, but what's this on the east coast??? Some cool dude with true rock star cred makes the Cadillac of Floyd Roses? Go on...Floyd Upgrades, ladies and gentlemen. But, I must warn you: they ain't cheap.

So, I received the Floyd Upgrades bridge and stuff yesterday (Monday). First off, I am impressed with the quality. That is most important to me, as I intend to keep it forever and abuse it like only Steve Vai should. They shipped it on a Saturday. A Saturday. 'nuff said there. I did not pay for express shipping, either.

So, I've decided to build her up on the forum, with photos. Because if there aren't pics on the thread, it just ain't real...

The black Shaller mini locking tuners are arriving on Thursday from California. And, I ordered real black Mother of Pearl mini tuner buttons for the black Shallers, too. They are coming from Germany, who knows when, but they were shipped the day I ordered them, last week.

Let's install the Floyd Upgrades bridge, shall we? They say, you get what you pay for, and this baby oozes quality.

Don't hate me for this Floyd Upgrades...I ordered mine as such:

F.U. High Performance bridge
- brass spring claw
- noiseless springs
- Titanium saddle inserts (no more cracked saddle inserts for Tollie!)
- 42mm Titanium big block
- black hardware

Hello again...

Well, the transformation went smoothly. I learned that the Gotoh tremolos that EBMM installs have a brass block. I was pretty impressed. No wonder they sound so good. Nice job, Big Poppa.

As I mentioned earlier, however, I went with a huge titanium block for my Floyd Upgrades tremolo.

I never remove all the strings at the same time, so this is a good time to clean the fretboard well...

And, I measured in several locations during the reassembly for accuracy...

I used a tiny little screwdriver for the small screws...

Wow, this is starting to look like an Axis with a serious attitude problem...

I need to put a shim under the locking nut on the bass side. The open E and open A are buzzing, yet at the first frets they ring out with no buzz.

I'll get back to you all after I square that away...

Wow, that is looking great

Thank you so much! Finally, a comment... :D

I'll keep posting as she evolves...after the tuner buttons arrive I'll be sending her out to have the Sustaniac Stealth Pro Sustainer system installed! I will have it wired without drilling into the body. More to come...

Very cool look and great job!

Any issue with the alignment of the tuners' screws on the back. Their placement is different, correct?

Hey Man,

Thank you so much!!! It is so crazy that I was just admiring your collection on your infamous grey sofa, then I looked at my post and you had left this comment...

Wow, no, I did not have any issues at all installing the tuners. The screws lined right up with the holes...

Oh, and by the way, I absolutely love you, but that double bag thing with those two guys you have going on next to your name is weird! I'm ashamed of myself when it makes me smile.

Hey Slav,

I just compared the new locking tuners versus the tuners on my stock Axis, and to get the locking tuners lined up with the original screw holes in the headstock, I had to cock them ever so slightly. Now that I compare the two, I can see it, but I don't mind. You can see for your self in my pics earlier this post.

I'll take a side by side pic later today and post it then...
