In order to be able to put my guitar in drop D, should I add springs to my JP6 to increase the tuning stability? I think there are three in there now, is there even room for more? I'm away from my guitar so I can't try it, and I don't care about the floating aspect of the bridge.

If you want to transition to drop D and back again you will need to put a stop in the trem cavity to make the tremolo dive only.

Adding springs won't stop the detuning of the other strings when you drop the E to D

have been using a tremol-no for this purpose for about 4 years with zero problems!

Do you want it to be permanently in drop D or do you want to be able to change between standard and drop D tuning? If permanently in drop D you only have to slightly loosen the trem claw, since there is a little less tension (assuming you still use the same gauge strings). No need for a trem stop or anything like that.

If possible I would like to go back and forth using the same gauge strings. I think Andy Timmons has 5 springs in his and said that he is able to go from standard to drop D easily but I'm not sure.

There is no reason for putting an extra spring 'cause the tension in drop D tuning is lower than standard E. I retune my JP7 from standard to drop D (6 to D) and sometimes to drop A (7 to A) and I don't need to change anything with the springs. I use 7 regular slinky.

But lowering the tension(detuning) causes the other strings to go out of tune :(

Yes it does :)
JP has floating trem, so the bridge won't "sit" on the body when You'll add more springs. The only solution is tremolo-no or sth like that.
When I'm retuning from standard to drop D or A I tune all strings - after some time it can be done very fast :)
