One of the things I love about this company is your dedication to innovate with your instruments. I find a lot of companies like Fender and Gibson live off of the glory of their old instruments, and their "new" models are simply new versions or re-issue of an instrument they released 60 years ago. While the newer models may never outsell Stingrays, each model is unique and innovative, not just a "Deluxe Stingray" or something like that.

Know you know this BP, but if auto makers just judged success by sales numbers, we'd all be driving Toyota Corolla rental car specials.

It's a shame the Bongo and Big Al aren't great sellers! They're truly amazing basses! I'll be representing my bongo where ever I go!

Agreed. I love my Big Al as much as (if not more than) my Ray. I think most people fear the different look of these basses more than anything. They're so non-traditional. I certainly didn't like them initially, but grew to like them. Then you HEAR them. Woah!

Appearance-wise, the Boingo is outside of ALL traditional
styling for bass & geetar ... but I'm sooprise to here that
buyers resist the Big Al based on its appearance, cuz it's
solidly within long extant stylistic traditions, IOW it's NOT
a toadally new LOOK, which IS quite obviously a problem
for marketing the Boingo.

I don't care for the looks of the Boingo, but when I play
it I'm not looking at it ... so, no problemo ! If somebody
sold affordable replacement bodies, pre-finished and pre-
routed for "drop-in" instalation to "normalize" a Boingo, I
would definitely be innerressed. Ain't gonna happen tho',
cuz due to its looks, there ain't enuf Boingos out there
to justify production of replacement bodies. And acoarst
SOME Boingoistas actually LIKE the way they look, which
further reduces the possible market for bodies. But if any
luthier owed me a payment-in-trade, I'm sure I'd hit him
up for a coupla Boingo bodies ! And maybe I'd even have
them styled similar to the Big Al, genre-wise, not cloned.

The people who avoid buying a Big Al don't know what they are missing. I used to think the Bongo was the most ergonomic bass on the market, but the Big Al has trumped the Bongo in that department. Plus, the palette of tones available from the SSS model is amazing. And yet, you can keep it simple if you want, run it in passive mode with one pickup and the EQ knobs flat, and it still sounds killer. I've owned around 70 basses over the years, and around a dozen EBMMs, but this one is an absolute keeper.

While I know I am in the minority the Bongo and Big Al are my favorite EBMM basses. Followed closely by the Sterling and Reflex. The Ray is my least favorite, and I still love it more than anything available from other companies.

It's kind-of like having a mega-hit song. I can just imagine
that Kool & The Gang love playing "Celebration" these days!!

Yeah .... like they're sooooo sick of it that they even burn
all their royalty checks .......

What I'm sayin is that I suspect it's the SR that keeps the
lights on at EBMM.

I am pretty much in agreement with all of that except the 25th HH (a hot Reflex, to be sure) is climbing the ladder here at Camp Bovine. Hell, I might have to get a Reflex, you never know.

I think that reflex just need new color chart, ...load of new fresh colored reflexes in famous world bass/guitar stores on stock, ...and maybe some of EBMM artists to play them...success guaranteed in a few years from now!

No doubt. It's not a radical design. I think once some of them end up in stores they will sell well. I've only played a 25th, but it was a fantastic instrument.

Keko - I think they only need three colours - Venetian Red, Black and the gorgeous white colour ;-)

Well, ...I remember RJ's prototype in Lamborghini Orange 5HH with rw board..absolute KILLER, ...why not in serial production?

So as many transparent quilt and flame maple top colors, ...why not?

Something with sparkles, ...blue, red? Why not? :)

Dargie reflex? :)

And, ...I agree, mine (white/maple) is KING, everywhere I show up with that one, ...I can see jaws dropping around me!!! :D

Recently I had a small sized club gig and one friend bass player came to hear it (he already saw it unplugged) and I just bought a small lightweight D class ultra-modern bass combo neodymium rig (3-way, 12"/6.5"/1"), ...so when we start playing I remember his face...white like my reflex!!! :p
His last words after break: -Jesus, ...damn, ..wtf?...holly...may I touch it one more time, ...ugh  ...I must get one! (by the way, he's pretty good SR5 player) ;)

The Big Al is truly the Greatest Bass on the face of the planet. SSS or H 4 string or 5. Coming out of a Mesa Boogie Walkabout Scout. It is the sound in my head for the world to hear. If i ever get super famous, i would ask for one with a reverse body style, trans white to sparkle purple rise fade finish, and brightly colored numbers Instead of fret mark dots on a solid rosewood neck. You could call it the Big-Ern it would be the gaudiest thing ever, and i would love it till the day i pass.

Your Pal Ernie

Erin.
