I have some questions regarding the Bongo 6 and I'd appreciate it you people helped me out.

How many of you have played the Bongo 6 ? I'm looking for a great 6 string under 2K and The Bongo seems like a great bass. I've seen Ed Friedland's video on youtube and the bass does sound great.

I have a big question about the pickup configuration - the H, HH or the HS. What is the main difference between these three configurations. I'm looking for a fat sounding bass that can sit well in the mix. I also want to have the clarity to play chords in the upper register. I also want great harmonics. I don't slap that much, but I'd like to have a great slap tone in the occasional moments of insanity when I start slapping :p

I have a fretless OLP stingray and I love it. It sounds great, but from what I've been hearing from various people is that the Stingray and the Bongo are completely different sounding basses.

Also, I'd like your take on the roasted necks. I have no idea what the upcharge is on them, but I'm willing to go maybe a couple of hundred bucks over 2K for it since it offers great stability.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure it was Maddog who said
"HH Is Godzilla
HS is Hannibal Lecter
H is a Stingray on steroids!"

But seriously you wont be disappointed with any model you choose, I went with the HH and it absolutely slays. There is simply not enough words to describe how amazing it is. :D My Youtube & Soundcloud has covers and there's a wide variety of tones from Dirty to clean and everything in between!

I have played the Bongo 6 HS and loved that configuration. I mostly kept the balance control in the middle which gave a fair amount of punch to my sound along with harmonics on the occasion. The stingray and bongo are totally different animals because of a number of factors, but the bongo is an amazing sounding instrument. As BassMasta66 said, you won't be disappointed.

I have 5 HS - and all I can say is that you can't miss with the bongo. Whatever you choose, the choice is right :)

If you have more pickups, then, you have more options to deal with, so if you don't know how to deal with - than it's gonna be trouble :D But , afterall, when you can choose between the pickups, why not to take the one with the HH or HS, it doesn't matter.

sorry for my english skills ;)

I think that HH is the right option for Your needs, as You described above!

Anyway, I tried only single H Bongo 6 in Stealth finish with "small EQ", ...killer bass! :)

I tried also 5 HSp and 5 HH Bongos, so that's why I think that HH is for You the best choice!

Check "Why I like my Bongo" Thread at this forum ( Bongo HH content) and I'm sure You'll get the point! ;)

I have the HH model. The 2nd H gives you some massive low's that don't muddy up the sound. It's got a crystal clear slap zing, especially when you set the blend in the middle. I played all 3 setups for a few hours each before deciding on the HH, as
I found it most versatile out of the 3 and overall best sound. If you play songs where the Musicman growl doesn't fit in, just rock it over toward that neck H.

I agree with kamakazee, ...only wider tonal spectrum could give a HHp model, ...but not in offer yet for a 6 banger!

Thanks a lot everyone! I think it's been the HS and the HH now! And now I do think I want the roasted maple neck. They do offer it on the Bongo 6, don't they ? I saw it on bass central.

The roasted necks were a limited time option, available to order only for a month or so in 2010. So unless you find somebody who has a Bongo 6 with roasted neck and can be convinced to part with it, you're out of luck for now. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if the roasted neck is offered again at some point, either as a limited run or as a production option.

I love all three, but I always come back to the HH for some reason. It will do everything you outlined in your original post.

Hey. Thanks a lot for all the replies. It's too bad, the roasted maple neck isn't a standard upcharge option right now. I'd love to have gotten that. Oh well, you can't everything in life!

I am contemplating adding a Bongo 6 to my rig in order to get more tone for some of the different music I am doing with my band. That being said, I am still on the fence about 5 string vs 6 string. I currently play a Stingray 5 H vintage sunburst with black pg, and I am wondering just how much of a change playing a Bongo 6 would be. I would go out and play one, but the closest store to me that has one at the moment is a 9+ hour road trip away. Any tips or advice you might have would be appreciated.

I have a Bongo 6 HS and it sounds amazing. In my humble opinion I think it sounds much better than the Stingray and for me is also easier to play. You won't go wrong picking one up. On the HS I can procure so many different sounds. I can get harmonics almost anywhere! It sounds great and is easy to play fingerstyle or slap or whatever. I play literally every type of music and I can get much more out of this bass than most other basses I've played.

Can't go wrong. Join the club. Buy a Bongo 6. Do it.
