What kind of weight range can be expect in the regular Axis line?

(not the Axis sport or Super Sport).

Are they all made out of basswood? If so, how much of a range of weight difference can you expect?

If they are made out of different woods, how can you tell if you have and ash, alder, mahogany or ??? if it's painted black?


The reason I ask this is I saw a regular Floyd rose Axis in a store that weighed a ton. I just wondered if it was ash or something like that?

They are all basswood with a maple top so there shouldn't be a wild difference in weight. That particular guitar may have a very dense body and neck.

Well, that's good to know. I thought Basswood was a fairly light wood, but apparently like you say there may be denser, heavier pieces out there. Thanks for the info!

When I sold a bunch of mine I weighed them, 7.6 to 8.2lbs. with various DOBs. 25th ann. was 7.5lbs

In my experience, the ones with Floyds weigh a little heavier.

If you buy from GCs platinum room they have weight listed in the spec. If that helps at all.

I bought a Super sport at one time and the guy said it was an ash body. It was a tank too, I'll bet it was 8.5 or 9#. So maybe he was mis informed or maybe the Sport and SS get different wood and the regular Axis is Basswood only.

Maybe I was lucky and got several super light ones at first. My first couple Axis were all around 7#. What I have now are closer to 8#. It's amazing how much difference just one pound makes in feel. Tone seems close to the same though.

Mine are all very light and close to 7. I hope the next one that I get will be as light, hopefully!

I just got my old trusty red Axis back today after selling it a year ago. It's light! It came in at 7# even and it's the most tone monster of any Axis I've owned. ... so maybe light is good My other Axis is 7# 4 ounces which isn't too bad.
