I posted over on FB and some of you will already know this, but Brian sent me some strings. Have you guys heard of these things? They're COBALTS. Crazy, really.

Now most of you know that I am not the target audience for fancy new strings. Most of my basses are strung with flats. Okay, fine, yes, I hear you - okay, ALL of my basses are strung with flats. I hope you're happy for making me reveal that.

I like flats. My buddy Bob Nyswonger (google that bad-ass if you don't know who he is) says that it's because I don't enjoy "full harmonic content". There was almost certainly some truth to that. From time to time, I have been known to say, "I don't play TREBLE. I play BASS." And then I generally say something about if I wanted zing, I'd play cymbals.

I strung the Lamborghini Orange Burst Reflex with the Cobalts. Um. WOW.

See, the top end "zing" of roundwound strings is what I have grown to not enjoy, but these have all the top you could ever want without being overly bright. (You can probably dial that in, but I refuse.) In fact, even with flats, I turn my treble knob all the way down - how's that for dedication? But I set everything flat and these strings sound amazing. No one is more surprised than I am.

They have TEETH. Without being sizzly.

And I am a stickler for mids. I MUST HAVE MY MIDS. I am all about the mids. With most rounds, I feel that the top end sort of overshadows the mids. This is not the case with the Cobalts. My mids are there. In spades. Mids galore, if you will.

Oh, bottom-end, you ask? Wicked. Excellent. Outstanding.

Cobalts are to normal strings what Bongos are to normal basses.

Here endeth the lesson.

Awesome! Good to hear. I'm looking forward to getting a couple of sets too - up here in the North they apparently take a while to be delivered. I too have grown to love flats and, especially on my Bongo, turn the treble down a fair bit. I turn the mids down too but not as much as the treble because I love having beautiful, sweet, detailed mids - which the Bongo H does in spades.

One thing I love about flats is the way they feel so I'm a bit leery of going back to rounds just for that reason alone. I guess the cobalts improve things in that regard too though so...all signs point to...cobalt = goodness.

Excellent choice on the Reflex. The first thing I did was reset all eqs (bass and amp) to flat then adjust for the Cobalt tone.

I love the Cobalt low B. I play in a smaller room (about 180 ppl) with subs under the stage. On a lot of songs the regular slinky low B rumbles and muddies too much but with Cobalt it runs real smooth and works great. The high strings are super smooth also and don't get as much high end zing. The more I get adjusted to them the better I like them.

If Cobalts are to normal strings what Bongos are to normal basses imagine what Cobalts would be like on a Bongo. :D

I will be finding out soon.

Prepare to be blown away gentlemen - they're a revelation, even more so on the Bongo! As I said on the earlier thread, my first gig with this combo got recorded with an ambeient mike - you're right on the low B - cuts through like a dream - the best track recorded with this didn't get on You Tube but it is wicked - a lot of low Cs and Ds.

Very happy you've been enticed away from those flats, Jack! You're not going to start slapping that Reflex are you!!!

Have a couple of cobalt sets ordered now, both for my SR's and my baby size EBMM - can't wait to try them out.
Pretty sure they will go on my HH first.

Ohh, ...yeah! :)

Can't wait my first set of Cobalts, ...my dealer said in the middle of May they will arrive! ;)

From what Jack wrote above, Cobalts could be the Jackpot strings for my needs!

I ordered mine and they are on the way. They will go on a Stingray when they get here.....I love checking out new strings and these sound very interesting. My 17 year old came and asked me if I had heard of EBMM Cobalts and you posted about them on FB the next day....I took it as a sign!

Unfortunately my sister in law gave me a GC gift card. She didn't realize I almost never buy anything anymore from GC. So I'm stuck...

So, what you are saying is that your sister-in-law is buying your strings. What happened to the peasants buying their own strings? :p
