Is there anything I should look for? Is there any FAQ section on this subject? and how much are they worth these days? It's a 93 red quilt top supposedly in new mint condition but this dude isn't into guitars, he found it at an estate sale and is trying to flip it. Also what is considered mint and how can you determine the condition and prices for that condition? Guitar Grading & Inspection scale?

thanks!!!

Ha, I was trying to buy this same one at the same estate sale. He paid 1600 for it and I still have the emails to prove it. Mint would be no scratches/playwear and unfaded color. Red is one of the more common colors but in mint condition should still fetch between 2k-3k depending how good the quilt is.

jawbreaker for what it's worth - do an A/B against an axis - or if you're not in need of a floyd - and axis super sport - for me the super sport beats the evh hands down.

Agreed !! Check out Tollies Black EVH ! Its a monster player, with a sweet Flame top, and much rarer than the Red ! (And the price is right !)

There's a sweet Black EVH for sale in our forum that might fit the bill. Tollie is a great guy and he absolutely loves EVH's.

Check his out. It's nice when you can deal with a trusted Forumite on guitar dealings. Plus I think the black may be more rare than the red. Double check that though. If I had the cash, I'd go this route.

actually the dude paid $1500 or less...I talked to the estate sale lady and she said $1500 BUT was really easy to negotiate with so I'm pretty sure he got it for less. She sold me the 5150 1/2 stack for 450 when she was asking 475 just for the head. Also what's considered a good quilt? here's the pic he sent me.

That looks like a flame top dude and isn't going to fetch the big bucks. Damn, can't believe he got it for less than 1500! And great deal on the 5150. Like everyone is saying, check out Tollie's Black flame top. There were only about 600 made in trans black as opposed to the 1400 trans red. when dealing with EVH's its better to find the rarer ones.

so what would be a good price for that red one?

I personally wouldn't pay over 1800 for it. Thats just because i dont like red guitars though and its not a quilt. Plus you know what he paid for it! However, Like anything, its only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

It will take 11s, but you may want to take it to a luthier to slightly file the nut to fit those size strings. Likely 10s or 9s won't need any adjustment to the nut.

They don't make those 5150's anymore. I would just leave them in the case as period correct case candy. (That's probably what they were doing in there anyway.)
