Hi, can anybody help me please. Just bought this from a reputable music shop in uk. 1990 Silhouette and now I am having a closer look and not happy with what i'm seeing. My question is, is this neck joint acceptable on an old guitar or should I send it back and get my money back? I believe I have 7 days from taking delivery. Thanks John.. neck gap best small_DSC8790.jpg

Looks ok to me. Not every neck is perfectly snug against the sides of the pocket.

More importantly ... how does it sound?

Man! That silo is gorgeous! I would not let it go.

Seriously, the neck joint isn't an issue. It's got 6 bolts, it's not going anywhere, plus that is a fairly minimal gap. You're most concerned with the coupling of the neck/body, so if it sounds good then you're good to go.

IMHO it is not right or perhaps better to say it is not a good fitting neck joint and irrespective of having bolts holding the neck onto the body you should not have a gap there. These gaps are very often common on lower quality guitars but you wouldn't expect to find it on a high quality one.

Now it sure as heck is not going to do any harm but the real question is "Is that gap going to bug you every time you look at it?". If the answer is yes or most probably then send it back.

Thanks for that advice, I really want to keep this guitar because its a real looker but! you are probable right it will bug me, already I am wondering if this is some sort of second. I suppose at £900 it should be near perfect, after all its not that much short of a new one. I just hope the shop will take it back without any trouble if I decide that way.

I have a similar gap in my $1700 Fender Artist Series Strat. It does bother me a bit, but not as much as at first. The various, inexpensive Squier Strats typically have no gap, so why on a MIA Fender? The Custom Shop's don't (typically), so clearly that is the standard they see as ideal. It's an aesthetic thing only, however. There are lot's of examples of famous, great sounding Strat's of the stars that have large gaps.

On the bright side, you are far less likely to suffer neck pocket finish cracking due to the gap.

Over 20+ years a lot of things can happen to a guitar, and it's probably just "stacked tolerances" between the neck pocket, the neck, and worn screw holes inside the neck. If you have a good tech look at it then it can be tweaked to virtually disappear.

There are a lot of bolt on neck guitars out there with gaps around the neck pocket, some sound superb and also fetch a lot of money as in vintage fender strats. Like the others said there is nothing wrong with it and if it plays and sounds as good as it looks then fine. Hard call for you as you say she is a real looker but going back the other way it may also effect the resale value or make it harder for you to sell it in the future. If it was mine and I had paid 900 I would most certainly send it back not because of how it sounds or plays but purely because that gap would bug me until I either filled it in (Joke) or moved the guitar on.

That neck joint is not an issue and that gorgeous Silo needs a good home! What a beautiful find!
Hi, thanks for that. While i'm asking questions can anybody tell me if pickup modules of different set ups are still available and if so how much do they cost? Wouldn't mind having a SSH or HH set up as well as my SSS if I decide to keep it. (which i really want to) Thanks John..
