EBMM Axis / Axis BFR vs (Fender) EVH Wolfgang USA?

So you would say the build quality is superior for the EBMM over the Fender EVH?

I would definitely give the build quality of the Axis a slight nod over the USA wolfgang. However when the product costs $1000 more, it's a large gap. Your for sure not getting a $1000 better guitar... your paying for Fender/EVH marketing and royalties to he who shall not be named.

to be honest I can get a USA Wolfgang for less or the same price as the Axis BFR I ordered, depending on what finish I would want!

The BFR I ordered I am getting for $2400, I can get a quilted or flamed EVH for the same and a non-trans finish EVH for $1900

that is what is making this decision so hard!

I agree.....an Axis is the "anti-Jackson". I play absolutely everything. I have played all of the EVH inspired models.

My take on the Fender EVH standard after playing one for an hour in GC.......it's a nice $400 guitar for $2500.

I would absolutely take a $600 PV Wolfgang Special over a new Fender one. The EBMM EVH or Axis are on a completely different planet. If you like Jacksons, the PV has a 12" radius, if I remember correctly, so it'll be closer. But none of the EVH inspired guitars have slim necks.

When you say the Axis is the "anti-Jackson," are you saying it is different in the sense that it is more versatile in its tone and (or) playability? Or, are you saying that it is just so different in playability and feel that it is not even remotely like a Jackson?

A couple of things.... 2400 for a brand new EVH is a great price. If your not set on the bahama blue burst, you can get an Axis tribute with a premium top for $1925 and there is still a bunch in stock. You really can't go wrong either way. I highly recommend finding someway to play them before you throw down that much coin.

The neck back on the Axis is rounder than the Jackson-It is not flat in any way.
I find the Axis neck much easier to play but I am a thumb over guy unless needed.
The bigger issue you may is there is no cutaway arm contour like the Jackson

I've owned various Strats, Teles, San Dimas '83 Charvel, and gave them all up when I played my first EBMM. I've never looked back !! The Axis/ Super Sport is ,by far, the best neck I've ever played.

it seems that after further research I may like the neck of the EBMM Axis over the EVH. But, as far as the Axis Tribute, I am not a fan of the borwn back plus my favorite finish is the Trans Blue which is still offered on the EBMM Axis today.

So now the real question for me is: Is the EBMM Axis BFR worth the extra change over a standard EBMM Axis?

There is a nice Blue axis in the emporium right now. Priced great. Buy it you can't lose. skip the tribute and BFR's for now.

I usually only buy Brand new. But just out of curiosity when did the Tributes come out?

The first run (~130 guitars) were introduced (here) on 8/22/11. They sold out real quick before ever hitting guitar center. They have since done a second run and that is what you see on the guitar center platinum website. If you want a quilt top, you have to either get a BFR or a tribute as the regular Axis is now only flame top (unless you buy used or new old stock)

I believe the quilt top still comes on a regular Axis. The difference now is, you can't choose between flame or quilt on the regular Axis. It's luck of the draw, on which top you get.

yeah I really only buy brand new, I am quirky like that. But, it looks like I am leaning towards a USA Fender EVH Wolfgang in Quilted Trans Amber w/ Maple Board. I mean for $2400 I kind of just find it too good a deal to pass up. It is the same price that my EBMM dealer wanted for a BFR Axis in BBB.

And as far as the Tribute it is only what I read, I cannot speak with experience.

But, something I have been wondering about is what grade flame or quilt does EBMM use on the Axis and Axis BFR?

I am guessing 2A on the Axis and 4A or 5A on the BFR?

The P&^$y felt nothing like my EBMMs(In a not so good way). I would really look twice at the Blue Axis on the FS thread. If I hadn't ordered my "build" guitar, I would snag it.

yeah really not into the used even if it is mint. I can buy a brand new Trans Blue for $1399 and have the piece of mind, lol.

Right now my choices are tough b/c of price for brand new:

Axis Trans Gold or Blue Quilted - $1399
Axis Honey Burst Quilted - $1425
Axis BFR Bahama Blue Burst Quilted - $2400

EVH USA Wolfgang Black - $1899
EVH USA Wolfgang Trans Amber Quilted - $2400




There're plenty of pros to each of these models, but I have my fears with each model.

1. My fear with the EBMM Axis is the neck shape and 10" radius. (Used to compound radius w/ C shape necks)

2. My fear with the EVH Wolfgang is the vintage size frets. (Used to anything from medium to jumbo)
