I'm sure BP will set it straight, but here is what I remember hearing. I remember a couple different stories.
1) Before the EVH model, Axis was the name of the EVH prototype that Dudley was working on (before EVH was ever involved with the design process) EVH came in and liked the design so much that he adopted it for the EVH project with EBMM.
2) Axis was the name given to any prototype guitar that was being worked on, until a name was decided on. The only evidence I've seen to support this is a picture of an Albert Lee with a neck on it that said "Axis".

Axis was the original name for the Guitar that is now the Albert Lee Model, it never came into production as an Axis, around `87 Sterling gave it to Albert at the EBMM Christmas Party, Albert liked it, and it became his Signature Guitar
They had a Trademark on the Name so they used it later for the current Axis Model.

During the development phase of the original guitar, Dudley and BP were on a whirlwind tour of Europe and Asia. They started in Germany, went through Italy and on to Japan. They were so impressed with each of the countries, they wanted to name a guitar for their trip.

That's actually correct. They visited (in order) Albania, Xambxczief, which is a disputed territory between Germany and Poland, Iceland and Switzerland.

Okay, seriously. The name originates from people calling a guitar an "Axe". So, they cleverly, if not boastfully declared, "This is what an axe is supposed to be!". Axe is. Axis.

Originally before Ed came into the picture the staff at EBMM were working on a guitar that was called the AXIS... this guitar is now what we referr to as the Albert Lee Signature Guitar. Due to the factory capabilities at that time they they were not able to focus on multiple designs at a time and this is when ED came into the picture. All efforts went into making Ed's guitar and developing that guitar.
Somewhere in the mix Albert Lee was given an "AXIS" at a gathering and he fell in love with it... but because of the factory capabilities at the time it couldn't go into production.
After everything with ED was finished and the transition to a non-evh model was in place they dubbed that guitar the AXIS all the while Albert Lee was given a Signature Guitar...
There were a few Al's that actually had the AXIS head stock... i've seen it once here on the forum.

Albert got the first one no logo maybe xmas 86...we had the trademark because it was a cool name...noe more.....or

Thanks BP for the clearup. I thought there might have been some sort of deep meaning or involved story behind the name. But sometimes a name is just a name.
