Hey guys. I'm having an issue with my EVH and was hoping to hear some opinions on what I should do.

Here's the short version of what's going on.

I got my EVH in 1995. I played the hell out of it and over the years, I've had several re-frets. On the last re-fret, I had a bit of fret sprout, so I brought it to someone to file down the edges a bit. I've had this done many times with no issues, but the person who did the filing decided to use this new tool specifically made for this purpose. This tool has a preset angle used for dressing frets and unfortunately that angle was totally wrong for my neck and he accidentally took the frets down too much and took off some of the neck wood along with it. It was an accident, all is forgiven...stuff happens. I brought this guitar back to my normal guitar repair guy and he told me the neck needed new frets again. He put the new set on, but now the guitar neck has gone through so much trauma that it feels totally different. The frets feel huge now because there's really not enough room to properly roll the frets down. We're afraid to dress the frets anymore because it looks like if we take anymore off, the E-string will slide right off. The guitar is just not as fun to play as it used to be. This is heartbreaking because this guitar was definitely my favorite and it had the greatest neck I've ever played.

I'm really at a loss here. Can you guys think of any way I can save this guitar?

Thanks,
-Richie

I would call customer service and see what kind of options they can have for you. Maybe a brand new neck since you love the guitar so much? Take it back to the guys that MADE the guitar and see if they can help!

This is why I love stainless steel frets. :) I wonder how many refrets an average fretboard can take. There's a handful of local repair guys who can re-board necks but I think that costs as much as getting an aftermarket neck. I hope EBMM can take care of this for you.

A good luthier could recreate the profile for you - there is a lot of crazy talent out there if you do a search.

I wonder if your fretboard could be removed and replaced with a new one?

C.S. is always a good starting point too

Man, sorry to hear about your luck. I would say that this guy should be able to do anything you need done.

Shuriya Guitarcraft - Art of Guitar Repair

Take a look at some of his work. There are a lot of photos there where I would have never guessed that a guitar could come back from. Given examples of his work, and his general philosophy, he'd be your best bet.

Contact ebmm customer service, get a quote, send it to them. They provide refretting services for a reasonable amount.

Richie-

As suggested, I would definitely contact MM and see about sending it to the factory. If anyone can help you, they can.

Sorry to hear about your beloved EVH. I hope things get worked out for the best with EB customer service. It would be interesting to know if they have a spare EVH neck just hanging around in the far back corner, or perhaps can fix it.

@Ozzy: Take off eh?, Hoser!

Damn that is a bummer Rich and I know how you feel. My first option would be to contact the EB CS Department. If that does not work out take the guitar to Mat Brewster of 30th St in guitars in NYC as he is as good as they come. I know the tool you are talking about as they sell them on the net, but they are not one size fits all and someone used the wrong size= Ouch. But I am certain it can be repaired so dont freak, though it is going to cost.
