I could be wrong but this sounds just like what bought me to this forum. The coating clouded over, broke up a little, then started to come off my stingray. I'm fairly sure a temperature change started the problem but age is keeping it going. How bad is the damage? Is the coating getting cloudy and soft?

For mine, near or far, it is not very apparent.
Doesn't look cloudy.
No breakage or peeling. Is your sort of a peeling effect or chipping off?
but when you go very near, you can see the adhesive residue like thingy which forms a very thin cloud. Not cloudy enough to veil out the wood grains though.
When I apply water, the body temporarily feels very smooth and it all comes back again when it dries out.
When I use a smooth wet cloth to go over the residue, it runs over quite smoothly. But when I use a wet microfibre cloth to go over the residue,it keeps getting stuck.
And another thing, about 20% of the body does not feel sticky:the parts near the neck both front and back and the parts near the neck plate are smooth. The lacquered birdeye maple neck is also free from this plaque.
I can only post pics on the weekend ,so I'm trying my best here to build up the suspense.

Do you know what kind of finish the sabre has applied?lacquer or nitrocellulose?
I tried wax and it still felt sticky.
When I put water over the finish the sitckiness was covered up for a while, till
the water evaporated and my hope evaporated as well!

It had a lotta finish checking, and the finish was kinda too thick to be nitro ...
judging the thickness by what I could see via the checking lines/cracks :-/

A white, sorta rosin-like residue would form in some areas. Clean it off and it
just comes back in a day or two. Looked like like rosin dust from an URB bow.
Very weird.

Natural finish? I would try rubbing alcohol as I already mentioned.

Are you describing something like powdery flakes?
When I put my thumb over the sticky finish, I can later see my thumbprint imprinted.
Inspecting it over and over,it looks to my untrained eye like sticky residue over the finish instead of softened finish.
oh btw, I've used Pledge on my bass but it didn't help.
Anyway,I sent a question over to CS and hope they will reply soon with a solution.
The alcohol and olive oil recommendations here are extremely tempting! But I shall hold back first pending CS's expert opinion.

I don't recall the residue being like flakes.
The 'white dust, like URB bowing residue'
is a prettty accurate description. Anywho,
I found no long term cure, and I no longer
have that ax. I have an SR4 HH which is a
much more satifactory rendition of a dual
humbuggery, MM-wise :)

CS gave the following solution

- Do NOT use: acetone, paint thinner, lacquer thinner.

- try rubbing alcohol first.

- if that doesn't work, then try alcohol based degreaser.

- if that doesn't work, then try naptha (wear gloves); you may have to polish the body after using this to restore the shine.

I have used rubbing alcohol many times, nice to hear that is what CS recommends, good luck!

Zippo lighter fluid (naptha) will remove stickyness.

Try and steer clear of silicone based products - not good.
Yeah, I remember reading somewhere that silicone should be avoided but its either Spector or PRS guitars use silicone out of the factory.
