after 5 min of playing with a DarkLord, I put it right back down.

Don't get me wrong... it is one sexy beast of a guitar, but I don't dig the neck profile. It seems a bit chunkier than the Y2D... and I think the Y2D is my favorite EB MM neck.

She sounded great!!! But I'm more than happy with my Y2D's!!!!

For me it is all about the neck profile. I am not one of those guys that adapts to anything. There are some great guitars that I want but just don't dig the feel of the neck.

understood

I'm probably the only knucklehead who doesn't like the axis neck.

good to know - so my GAS for a DL is over. i like the Y2D neck-shape as well, i would go crazy if the neck isn´t feeling the same. just like with the axis and EVH guitars. i love the old EVH neck, but have problems with axis necks.
guess what, my mind plays tricks on me here, due to the body shape, the axis and evh look the same, my mind tells me "this is how the guitar should feel like in your hand" but my hand tells me something different.
i think it would be the same with the DL.

I know about the mind playing tricks Joe as it happens to me, but if the 1/32" they added to the Axis throws you off then neck profile on the DL would feel like a totally different guitar to you.

Conversely I'd love to try one out, I started my guitar playing on super skinny 80's superstrat necks but my tastes for chunky neck profiles has grown the older I get and I now love the fat 50's profile stuff! My fast shredding days are over and its more about tone (and considered note choice :)) which I seem to get more of from the larger necked guitars in my stable!

the dark lord is not a "real" steve morse signature guitar.
Let me explain, at first it has been made for joe Bonamassa who plays "les paul"guitar with rounded neck... so the guitar "dark lord" has a ifferent neck from a steve morse model...
I did not play a dark lord , but i had 2 Y2D in the past and they were very very nice!!!!!

Is the Darklord meant to appeal to different audiences than the Y2D? I never would have considered any Morse model but the Darklord had me maxed out on GAS. It is a brilliant guitar, much like a l*ster but with tons more versatility. Are the pickups the same as the Y2D?

Thread creep warning: I have guitars with widely varying neck profiles yet I find none of them objectionable. RG3120 w a wizard neck...Original SM model and a 25th with much thicker necks, no problems switching between them. It might take a me a minute or two to lock in but the neck profile has always seemed to be something I can adjust to ...hmmm. Yet I realize that it's life or death for some people (I had a teacher who would only play Jacksons or Ibanez Wizards with those super-thin necks, and the dude was a killer pro player).

I usually fine that the body of the guitar messes with my picking technique more than the neck messes with my fretting techniques. I often find the picking hand is the true limit of the fretting hand...yet rarely do you hear people complain or laud the shape of the body of a guitar or how your picking arm/hand rests?

Things to ponder

In the meantime I find the DL to be an absolutely badd-a$$ looking axe. I hope to play one someday.

Back you your regularly scheduled thread.

neck profile is everything. i've sold off premium guitars just because the neck didn't do it for me.
Really looking forward to checking out the DL.

I must totally agree with BUC here. Even though the neck shape is definitely important in its comfort and playability, the body shape is equally as important. I can play few different neck profiles without any major issues. Of course there are still certain profiles that my hand prefers but that's literally due to its physical attributes. And this goes for everyone...it's totally subjective. There is NO such thing as a better neck profile. It's the same thing with the body of the guitar. I have had a few EBMMs, but the Y2D just fits MY body perfectly and allows me to play without and drawbacks. For instance I cant get along with the Axis and ASS because it's much more compact. I loved my Silo Special, but always wished it was a bit bigger. Now the new LIII is also just perfect for me...the instance I picked it up I noticed the 3% made a huge difference how it sat against my body and the way my right arm sat on the top.

Now since we were talking about the Dark Lord, I totally got along with the neck just fine...but I just could not get past the reverse headstock. I was tuning the wrong strings all the time. I'm sure I would get used to it, but I greatly prefer the "normal" headstock tuning wise and aesthetically as well.

Different neck profiles, different body shapes...

That´s why there are so many guitars.

All of us preffer different things, so we must find out "The one guitar" which suits us the best...

For me, I haven´t played a better neck than the Y2D. But that doesn´t mean that I love playing my 25, Silho and JP...they´re all great!

The Darklord was meant to appeal to Joe Bonamassa. It probably just happened to be something that seemed to appeal to a lot of other people too. So, EBMM made them for the rest of us hosers.
