Well, next friday was supposed to be the day I'd be bringing the cornford hellcat home however Im having second thoughts. Not being able to try one is proving a difficult decision so I have started looking into alternatives. Do any of you knuckleheads out there own the Marhall JVM 410 combo? Looking at those and also looking into trying to find another vht clx combo. I just dont want to eat the $100 in shipping if I dont dig the hellcat

I have the Marshall JVM 205H with a VA Cab Don't get the Combo. Get the Head and a Cab. Really 50W put you in sweet tone land too. Unless your playing a Monsters of Rock Tour. Leave the 100 JVN for Dave M. Good Luck. The Amp Rocks.

I say take a chance on the Cornford. You will never know how great it could be unless you take the chance. If you buy a Marshall, which you could get just about anywhere, you'll be forever wondering about the Cornford and pining for it.

the Cornford is something a bit special, handwired, handmade in the UK, a unique amp, the Marshall is more of an amp from a very long production line, although it has quality also, Marshall practically invented the "rock amp" but having said that I would choose the Cornford, I don't think you would be disappointed,

Definitely check what's going on over at the Mts Forum if you want great amp tones that are affordable. Modular preamps that are be reworked in to any tone you want by some great molders....it's affordable compared to going and buying a Cornford!

Like Peterd79 I have a Dr Z Maz 18 which is truely an excellent amp, but I also have a Cornford Hurricane and also owned a Hellcat at a time when I was needing more power! Previous amps I've owned include a couple of Marshalls, a Fender 65 Deluxe reverb, Mesa Boogie dual rectifier, a Blackstar, a Peavey Joe Satriani head and a Bognor Shiva...

Without hesitation I'd say the Cornfords were the best amps by far and way way beyond the Marshalls. They are pretty rare where you live, don't miss the opportunity and kick yourself later....

Stu makes a good point. Getting the Marshall will leave you wondering about the Cornford. However, the Cornford will leave you wondering about how awesome an ENGL would sound. :) LOL

p.s. I have an engl for my Axis. :)

All your comments make me laugh a bit because us guys over at the Mts forum are getting the tones from the amps you guys are mentioning....at a very affordable price. You won't believe me until you try it...and no I don't have any investment interest in it....just a very happy user!
check out salvationmods.com or jadededfaithmods.com and find the samples to listen to.

1 Word. ENGL! Definitely definitely check out the Engl line- they just put out a new 'Retro' amp, but their line is extremely solid from beginning to end!

The main aspect of my point is that...he's not able to try the Cornford so is having to go on faith which is kinda scary since there's potential money to be lost. That said, I'm sure he's already read many peoples' opinions that they are really nice amps (and I will throw my vote in as well based on trying one in a store once). However, the Marshall is an amp that you can find in most decent music stores so there's a good chance he can try one at some point which takes away some of the fear of the decision.

But, crucially, if he gets the Cornford then there's a good chance he could then find the Marshall and compare it to the Cornford. However, if he buys the Marshall and never takes a chance on the Cornford then he'll very likely never be able to compare them and will never know which one he would have preferred.

Mind you...as others have said, this game could go one forever...trying and trading amps on and on. That said, if it were me, I'd start by taking a chance on the Cornford. I've never owned one but have tried one and I thought it was a great sounding amp.

Everyone always recommends the thing that they have and says it's the best but that doesn't really address his original question. I could highly recommend a Peters amp too but...that just leads down an almost endless path since there are a loads of great amps out there.

Get the Cornford!! :)

I've been answering the original question...go modular...there are plenty of great modded Marshall modules available and I'm sure one of the molders would build him one based on the Cornford amp. There are already some great ones available based on the Splawn, Cameron, Soldano and other Marshall based amps. Heck, in spot one you can have some great Fender cleans...spot 2 you can have a great Marshall tone and spot 3 go with an Engl tone. How many other amps do that? The modules might not be 100% the same as the original amp but they are at least 95% there at a lot less the cost of boutique amps.

Everyone has their favorites, nobody will 100% say yes or no, many amp threads over the years I have started a few:eek:

Good amp helps but has to be what you want and hear in your head, I found PRS Amps Sweet 16 is all I need.

AL SSS with a Golden Cello Mad Professor pedal = super tones out of the Sweet 16, dont ask just do it!!!:)

I tried an Engl Powerball 2 weeks ago at a local gc and it blew my mind upon initial noodling(so much so i put it on layaway on the spot to mull it over without the worry of someone buying it) However, when I returned last weekend to play it that wow wasnt really there anymore. One of the problems Im having is I want sooooooooo many amps and guitars I dont know what I want in the moment( dont know if that makes sense to you guys) Im going to try a few marshals tomorrow, a tsl122 combo and the jvm410 combo. If I dont get the wow factor the cornford will be on its way next week with pics to follow

I just received the Mad Pro Golden Cello from Musicians friend. Very nice pedal ! Equally as good as an OCD but different.
As for the Cornford, I wish I could try one. I learned early on though that you have to get what sounds right for you. It can get costly having your decision swayed by what others have opinions on. good luck !

I personally love the Line 6 Duoverb, and I have used them for almost 10 years. Whilst they are 'poo pooed' by tube purists, it gets me the tone I want and I often get compliments on my tone. A friend of mine used to use either a Marshall Anniversary head, a 5150 and a pair of Dual Recto's. He got himself a Duoverb and sold the lot! True story!

I think you can waste a lot of money on 'what you are supposed to have' rather than what you actually want. Most guitar players will tell you that if you don't have a tube amp you are basically an amateur bedroom player and will never be heard over the drummer.

I say, use your ears and have an open mind! I have had untold Marshalls, a bad experience with an Engl and played through all manner of very expensive gear over the years. Through all this, the Duoverb is my favorite.

SECOND THOUGHTS!!!!!! Its a Cornford!!!!! For me its so much better than the JVM. I had 4 JVM heads and would take a cornford over all of them.

Cheers,
