I haven't been able to find & play one, and will probably buy one sight unseen (sight unplayed?). I have played his regular signature model, and it was a nice fit.... though the Y2D has been calling me.

I found a youtube video of Steve Morse showing off the guitar, and mentioning that it's designed more for rock, more or less (compared to his regular signature model, I presume). Can someone comment on it's versatility otherwise? How is it for blues? Classic rock tones a'la AC/DC, ZZ Top, etc...? How would you describe the pickups? I am guessing it covers the bases, but it's cool to hear from others' experiences.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Kaz,

Well, I recently picked up a Morse Dark Lord, and before it's arrival, I had plans to change the volume pot right away, since I usually use 500k pots. I've since changed my mind. The pickups sound really wonderful as is, and the volume pot on the DL is so friction free. I play with more gain than the classic rock tones you mentioned, and it does both styles well.

I don't like a middle single coil, like on a strat, because it's in my picking path and even though I don't hit it, it annoys me that it is there. I like how the single coil on a y2d is nestled right up against the bridge pickup. And, since I don't have any guitars with a single coil pickup, I am loving the new sounds I am getting. I really like the 4th position (single coil with bridge humbucker). The neck pickup is really nice and warm.

Let's talk about that bridge...weird, right? Wrong. It is awesome. It's chrome plated brass and it just so smooth and solid; you can't find any of that pitting you find in places on cast metal, like on the gotoh floyd rose's edges. It's comfortable to rest your hand on. It has really grown on me.

I'm very happy with mine. I bought it sight unseen (unplayed), too. A risk with the larger neck on the Dark Lord, but it is an amazing neck. The reverse headstock on the DL is so cool, but I didn't have to tell anyone that...

Good luck!

Bryan

the Y2D is one of the best rock-guitars on the planet!
from blues to rock to hard-rock - it will cover your needs.
it has a bit more of top end as the regular SM model, which comes from the maple top.

my fixed-bridge has more midrange as the tremolo guitars, but they are all great!

As others said - it is a rock machine - BUT I have found it to very versatile in other areas as well. There are several positions that can get close to a country twang when played clean as well.

Awesome guitar - go for it!!!

It is an awesome axe. I have 2 Y2Ds.

They both rock my socks off, and I go from Beatles to Slayer, and everything in between (rock wise).

It is a rocking machine and comfortable as hell.

Very versatile axe, I love the TOM-style bridge on the hardtail. The intonation with the compensated nut and TOM is spot-on.

One of the best balancing axes I have.

I've swapped out the pups for more vintagey-sounding tones, but that's no reflection on the stock ones. They are actually really interesting, you can find many threads here about them. The addition of the single coil allows for a lot of versatility over a night's playing. I start "Play That Funky Music White Boy" with it. :)

But as said above, it is a real comfortable axe to play. Ohhhh, and it is a drop-dead gorgeous purple.

You guys are all telling me the stuff I need (and thought I would) hear. Keep the comments coming if ya got em! :)

Just watched some Deep Purple tonight too. oh, it's on, baby. I'm about halfway there financially.... just gotta come up with the rest in early 2013.

From what I am hearing on the DP DVDs, I have a feeling I am going to seriously dig in on the neck pup (moreso than other guitars....)

I have a Y2D PDN for a couple of days now and absolutely love it! It's quite different from the standard Y2D, having a mahogany body but I have never played a standard Y2D so I can't make a comparison. I did have a standard MM Morse, that sounded a bit darker than the Y2D PDN but was great in it's own way. So go on and buy one.

How can you resist a guitar like this?

It's an amazing guitar and I regret ever selling it. I lose sleep over it still. Look at me over here at 4AM not sleeping.
