Hi!

So I´ve bought a MM Axis and someone told me it might be a fake one :( I have never seen a fake Axis in the past and thought there were none out there? I mean, I´ve seen OLP and Sterlings and so one with a different take on the Axis but never one that are a true fake if you know what I mean.

If someone has information about how to determit if this is a real or fake please let me know.

The problem is that the headstock seems to be a EVH one. Perhaps some previus owner liked EVH a bit to much and got new decals for the headstock. It surely looks proffessionaly done to my eyes though.

The pickups are not the origionals. It´s Dimarzio Air Zone DP192 (bridge) and DiMarzio Air Norton DP193 (neck)

The case is missing.

Any thoughts????

There is a serial number on the neck plate. It is G05742. I have posted in the (What is the production date of my guitar?) thread. But I haven´t got an answer yet!

Hello, and welcome to the forum. :)

I'm sure you'll get one monday. c.s. stays on top of that thread.

It looks like an Axis with a doctored headstock to me.

What specifically looks doctored? I just want to see what I am missing. It's got a great looking neck for a fake. Normally a fake would be an OLP or Sterling that got rebadged up but this has the right hardware for an older Axis/EVH and a nice looking neck with what appears to be the right finish. My gut would say it's fine so I just want to know what could tip me off. I am not skilled at spotting what would make a fake.

We've seen this one before. The serial number corresponds to a sunburst Axis, made in 1999.

So, I'd say it's an Axis, possibly refinished to look like an EVH.

Can you measure the width of the neck at the last fret? That might help clear up if it's an Axis or EVH neck (depending on how accurately you can measure, or how accurately the neck was made). The Axis neck width is 2-3/16" (55.6 mm) at last fret. The EVH was 1/32" narrower.

I agree with Tollie, by the look of the quality of the headstock markings (they look very dark and blurry to me) my guess is poor quality decals. Music Man don't use decals, the headstock logos are silk-screened on. they've been doing it that way at least since the JP came out, 14+ years. I don't know if they ever did use decals?

Yes I´ve just saw those earlier post you mensioned, interesting...

The neck mesures 55.4 mm by the very last fret. Is that closer to an EVH neck or an Axis?

It´s just confusing couse the build quality, and the quality of the finish is just flawless. The neck feels absolutely perfect and is by far the best neck I´ve ever seen. Wery dense and sustaining! I´ve bought all lot of necks from Warmoth, Musikraft and USACG for my strats and teles and this neck is better than all of them. I swear that it is not a OLP or a Sterling neck!!!

But you are right, the letters on the headstock seems a tad "bolder" than other pictures on the net??

Then that's an Axis neck. EVH would be around the 54.8 mm mark.

So it's looking like an Axis, body possibly refinished, or wrong neck plate/serial number. Headstock definitely refinished.

Is the neck plate recessed?

Nice looking guitar though!

Yes the neck plate is recessed!

Did they ever make them non recessed? What year did they make the change?

Yeah, it´s a nice guitar. Looks beutiful, feels nice and almost play itself :)

But I´m confused that someone stated it to be a fake one... Is there any other way than the neck plate I could tell..?

I hope the seller didn't represent it as an EVH. if you paid a fair, used Axis, price I would just enjoy it. Looks very nice by the way. The refinish job looks legit.

No worries, I bought it as an Axis and payed a fair price for it!

I wanted a differnt guitar to try out and have always thought the Axis looked cool. But we Fender guys seems to be a bit dumb in this case ;) We like to struggle some with the playability in our instruments, it´s just in our nature :) This guitar is way to easy and fast to play for me so it has been hanging on the wall for a couple of years. I sometimes take it down for some runs but I don´t bond with it that well.
