Welcome to the site Steve. I own a BFR Roasted Neck Bongo that I love. I have also played quite a few roasted neck JP's and 1 Reflex. Great guitars too. As far as how many were made of each model, Music Man does not release that info but I do know that the roasted necks that were in black sugar were only able to be ordered for 1 month. As far as pictures got for the black sugar, photos really don't do this finish justice. In person is where you will really see it pop. I'm actually using my BFR Roasted Neck Bongo today at church too. My best way to try and describe the finish though would be to maybe describe it as a black in candy sparkle or small metal flakes in the paint.

Hi there,

I have a Black Sugar Reflex, mine is a Hardtail. Not sure what I can tell you, they are a roasted maple neck with an ebony Fingerboard, MOP inlays and a BFR logo at the 12th fret, natural headstock. The Neck is finished unlike most Musicman guitars, I personally prefer the unfinished but have no problem switching to the finished neck at all. The body is standard reflex stuff, basswood, mahog tone block with a maple top, the black sugar finish is on the top and back of the guitar. As Jaydawg said, this is a hard finish to photograph, in some lights it looks flat black, shine light directly on to it and you get all kinds of gold/silvery sparkle.

As you can see I have a lot of reflex guitars, difference of this one compared to the others, well I find it a touch brighter than all the others with a bit more twang (very descriptive I know), whether that is this package or just the quirk of this guitar I can't tell you as I havent played or seen another! One thing I will say about both my guitars with roasted necks, since I bought each of them and have done numerous string changes, I have not had to alter the action since initial set up, they have stayed rock solid for me where my other Reflex's have needed tweaks over the seasons.

Not sure how many were made as production numbers have never been released, but not many.

I love mine and would never part with it, hope you enjoy yours and don't forget pictures when it arrives!!

What Barny said about the twang and being bright.

One thing that kinda bugs me is when you turn down the volume control it really darkens, and I mean fast.

Because of the sugar my guitar looks very brown when the light is right on it.

But, this is an outstanding guitar. So many tones and with my Boogie MKV I have a tonal palate that is wonderful.

My Reflex seems pretty heavy compared to the other reflexes. Not sure why.

If this is your first MM guitar, you have gone right to the top of their stuff, IMHO.

And, I don't think there a whole lot of the BFR BSReflexes out there, though we don't have the numbers. As far as I know, there was just the one run, and the Reflex has not been a high selling axe, as BP has told us here, and this being a special run. So, I think we are a part of a pretty unique class of MM guitar owners. :D

Welcome!

thanks guys

Had a few MM over the years an axis and a silhouette but neither for longer than a month due to taking them on trades on other gear and sticking to Gibson ( es 339 les paul etc ) at the time

Dont really know what happened just an impulse!
But its a fantasy guitar in most respects

hopefully there was only a few made I like being different these days after having Gibbos for so long

Anyone else out there?

They were $2,200-2,300 I think.

Got mine used (4 months old) for a grand less.

Hi and welcome to the forum. The Black Sugar Roasted Maple run is my favorite of all the runs I've been around to see. When the light hits the paint it sparkles nicely and the finished roasted neck is to die for. Good luck!

The pic above is an Axis. This is what you're really getting (and for a damn good price btw)
Not mine, but here you go.
You're a lucky man.
Drool away!
