Until recently, I always found 8 string guitars to be a bit gimmicky but, songs like this prove otherwise.

The 8 string guitar is totally justified and realized in this song.

Just listen to that riff at 1:30. There are no bassist in this band here people. Just two 8 string guitarists. Amazing!

There are a lot of cool 8 strings being made by small luthiers. It seems that they're taking cues from high end basses and using wonderful exotic woods, probably because most 8 string buyers aren't nitpicky traditionalists like the typical Gibson/Fender buyer.

Most production 8 strings bore me though. I am curious as to how, if at all, Music Man would choose to enter the 8 string realm.

That was a great song, Devin - thanks for the link!

Agileguy - Are you familiar with Devin Townsend's "wall of sound" style? Stylistically, he's across the board (some stuff is HEAVY, other stuff is atmospheric, etc.), but I enjoy most of his stuff and love the tone/sound he gets in that "wall of sound". So, I would recommended EBMM pick him up as an artist and do a signature model guitar - it would be OUT THERE but would cover a lot of range because of his diverse musical style. Currently he has a signature model Peavey 8-string though... so they got beat to the punch on that one!

I think either the sharper jp style (jpx, jpxi, jp12) or the majesty shape would lend itself well to eight strings, the body would probably have to be enlarged and I don't know how popular a 8 string trem would be, so perhaps a hipshot would fit better, but I think it would be cool to see, but that's just my 0.02$

I met him at NAMM and he's a really nice guy. Started listening to a lot more of his stuff after that show. He's SUPER heavy at times I love it.

Digging this track hard. Good stuff for sure. Thanks Devin :D

No problem man! I just hope EBMM is really going to prototype an 8 string for Petrucci. He briefly hinted at one in one of his recent interviews. Cant wait to hear what he can do with one.

He "rose to fame" with Steve Vai back on the album "Sex and Religion" - but that wasn't a happy time for him...

My favorite album of his - genuinely a life changing album to me (of which I have maybe a half dozen total) is "Ocean Machine BioMech" - check that out FOR SURE! :)
