I haven't been looking at new gear much lately (I think my Stingray 4 SLO 2-band EQ has ended my GAS. Maybe), but today I noticed that Sterling now offers a Ray 35CA which has the classic Stingray body shape and 2-band EQ (YES!). All I can say is... THANKS! I've been dreaming they would come out with this.

I've had several regular Stingray 5 basses over the years and they are, of course, outstanding. But... I've never liked the different pickguard shape and body contours. I don't play 5 strings much, but once in a blue moon, I need one for a song or two where the low notes are important in the song. It's been a situation that I don't want to spend the big bucks for a Classic Stingray 5 (although I'd love to have one), but I don't want the body shape/pickguard of the SUB or Ray5. So, I've been thinking about trying to find an old SUB 5 (US made). I've had one of these before too and they are great basses. But... they are getting hard to find for a decent price.

Enter the Sterling Ray 35CA. Exactly what I am looking for (in that wonderful vintage white/cream color!). So, my question for everyone here is, have you played one of these? What do you think? Nice classic Stingray sound? It looks as though the neck is narrower at the nut than typical Stingray 5s? True? Anyway, what is your overall impression? All I need is for someone who has played one to tell me they sound as good as the other Sterling Rays and SUBs. (I have a SUB 4 that is incredible for the price) Be an enabler for a GAS flareup. :)

I've got a fretless CA34. I like the neck. Not quite the same growl of my Rays but I play it a bit different than my fretted basses.

I recently picked up a shiny new cream Sterling Ray 35ca which plays beautifully.
Just recently got back into playing and didn't want to use the Q5 as a daily;
so came across the "NOS" 35CA w oem bag for a song. Didn't see any MM 5's
at nearly this pricebreak. Made in Indonesia (was unaware before the purch)
but impeccable construction- no joint gaps, smooth neck/fret, solid bridge,
no knob detents. Little sticker on the p/g says set up by San Luis. No fret noise,
but I lowered and reset intonation. Medium low frets. Fast and smooth as hell.
Immaculate finish and sounds like what it is- a Sterling w rosewood. Character+.
"Slightly- just slightly" less twang than standard MM tone w deeper lows & more sustain.
Plays a lot more like my '76 slab body w 45mm nut which makes my '88 EB Ray feel like a Jazz.
I tend to dig in harder- brings out the growl from the actives. No comfy cushion contours.
Not at all a EB gurly bass; nor a featherweight @ 9.6 lbs. on the scale so wide padded strap feels good.
Again- a great daily driver 5 so you can keep the vintage/ hi end stuff in the studio.
Sprung for the EB strap locks which I prefer less than the Schaller style and EB baseball cap to rep. smiley.
Right tool for the right job. Damn- freakin' novel...
