Production changes to reflect JP's preference. Sometime 10s, sometimes 9s. I thought they were 10s at the moment but I'm sure Pete or Benji or someone can tell you for sure.

I was told that the first 60 or so Majestys shipped w/ 9's (like mine), then they changed to 10's....

Yup. They originally had 9s but all JP model switched when Mr. Petrucci did to 10s. JPs shipped with 9s used to springs in a diagonal orientation and the 10s shipped with three in a straight orientation.
Good info for me about how to do the springs with different gauge strings. This newbie to MM thanks you. After reading all the info I could from EBMM I bought two sets of Cobalt 10's cause everything said it was set up with 10's. First I heard about the first sixty going out with 9's was today. Here. So I trashed a set of 10's no big deal. But, I am anxious for the local GC to get a Majesty with 10's so I can try it.

Hmmm, I never knew this. Both of my JPs came with 10s, and I have since switched to 9s but never adjusted the spring orientation. I can't remember how they are configured, but given the above statement they are probably not in diagonal orientation.
Any downside to setting up for 9s without altering the factory spring orientation which was meant for 10s? The physics of it would suggest more tension in diagonal configuration, right? I'm pretty sure I read a post a while back where this was discussed but couldn't find it today.

Three vs two springs would mean that the trem would operate a little stiffer, but it shouldn't have any other side effects, since you balance out the tension between the springs and the strings in order to make the trem sit parallel to the surface of the body.

Yes, there is a little more tension but it's not a lot. (Easy calculation for the trigonemtrically inclined). You could equally add the same amount of extra tension with a gentle crank of the claw screws. And here's the thing - all that counts is the total tension from the springs. The bridge does not know or care how the springs are arranged, it just feels the total pull. You can angle them any way you like, put them all on one side or the other, be as creative as you want, but it makes no difference at all (no matter what the good Mr Verheyen says).

It's a hybrid type set; it's the RPS 9s with a slinky .052 for the B string. I special order the set from Sweetwater but they always have difficulty assembling it for me lol. This most recent string change I used the M-Steel instead of the RPS. I'm still reserving judgment, but they didn't knock my socks off right off the bat.
Just to clarify the original 9's configuration from factory was only 2 springs setup in a diagonal orientation, not 3 with the outside springs diagonal. Support confirmed this with me while helping me with an unrelated issue. I'm going to give this a try over the next few days (mine is still setup with 3 parallel from the factory as it came with 10's) to see if there is a noticeable difference in tuning stability.
