After 17 years of playing, I finally own a Stingray (albeit not a "real" one..). Only thing I know is that it's the "2-band" passive tone circuit, which leads me to this question.. The pickup has a 2-wire lead coming off it. I'm assuming by the way it's wired, it's [internally] wired in series.

I want to convert this bass to an active instrument to give it more bite and tonal options. It has that definitive Stingray sound, but it feels like it's lacking something. I also wanted to have coil split/series/parallel switch installed. All of the pickups/preamps I've looked at have 4 leads coming off the pickup, compared to this one having two (hot/earth).

Lastly, is it common for one of these basses to have the dreaded "single-coil hum," even when grounded properly?

Yours was completed on September 4th, 2003. The pickup is wired in parallel and is the same pickup we use for 1 pickup Stingrays. They are all hardwired as parallel. You may have a coil out if you are getting that hum. With the pickup being wired in parallel one coil can go out and the other will still work, albeit with the introduction of 60 cycle hum. Plug the bass in and tap the pole pieces with a ferrous object. If you don't get loud "pops" out of one row of pole pieces that coil is not working and you'll have to replace the pickup. You can email me [email protected] for information on obtaining a replacement pickup if this is the case.

Gday, I got me a Stingray yesterday. Serial number E48874. Can you please ident the age etc for me.

Thanks!

EDIT - Sorry guys, I just started to read the thread and realised that it cant be dated this way - from looking at the musicmanbass.org site it looks like it is an '77 after all. Apologies

Hi all,

I bought a vintage Stingray yesterday after leaving the house to by a Precision from a local*pro player. He was a really nice guy who was letting some basses go and as soon as I saw the MM I knew I had to have it !

The serial number is B003102 and its a lovely dark sunburst. It sounds ridiculous even when in the hands of a guitar player like me :)

Can someone please let me know the year ?* I'm guessing its around '77

Thanks very much

Con

Thanks for the info AJ. THe date stamp on the neck says September 27, 2003, I'm assuming this is for when the neck was finished?

Also, both coils appear to be fine, all 8 pole pieces "pop" when touched with a ferrous object.
