My '93 trans-red was alder (not light). I think the early 80ties ones were ash. This '89 looks also like alder especially on the backside. I think since aroud 97/98 they changed to ash.

According previous owner is ash and original color cherry burst

You mentioned a 'REDBT code' in a previous post - do you mean a stamp on the body? Are you sure those are the exact letters? Do you have a photo of it?

Translucent red. Alder. My best Ray for the last 20 years.

Hi, definitly is an ash body according to MM database, is heavy enough and very hard wood. Love this bass, plays like butter whatever the action or neck relief you set.

Sure!! do you know where can i find in Europe a replacement bwb pickguard without truss rod notch ?
I got mine in white perloid from Rockinger, but that is more than 10 years ago. Not sure if they still sell those. Looks great on my 89. BTW, that is a great sounding light weight instrument (3,7 kg) almost as light as my Strat. It always sounded great, but the better the older it gets. I prefer its classic humbucker tone over my 2012 PDN.

Nice!

Is this actually the original guard?

I always thought the black ones were usually b-w-b (three layers) but I recently saw a Sabre from around 1986 that had a thick, black, matte, one-layer guard. Owner told me it was the original one...

Anyone seen those before?

Here is another trans-red alder, two piece body, from 1988 with the one-layer pickguard.

I remember those trans-reds came often with a clear pickguard in the late 80ties.
So, who knows...
