I was looking at my EVH the other day, and it dawned on me that the neck looked disgusting! 18 years of dirt and grime and gunk and goodness knows what! Plus the frets looked dull and had some kind of corrosion on them.

So with the aid of some You Tube video's, some very fine wire wool, painters tape and metal polish I cleaned her up! And I could not be happier! I even gave the back of the neck a light sanding with wire wool and its so smooth now!

Normally this would be the kind of thing that I would take a guitar to a tech to, but not knowing any really good ones round here I thought I would do it myself!

Very pleased indeed!

I'm a pro at cleaning necks now. My Emerald Burst Ass that I received the other day was filthy. I may actually need to sand the neck. That is just unacceptable on a new guitar. My new EVH just needed a light cleaning. It's amazing what happens with a little "housekeeping".

Really one of the simplest and most over looked aspects of keeping a guitar in top condition. If you are going to woodshed for a few hours, it is a must do to give the guitar a good wipe down after playing. So many guys do not realize that all that sweat and grime will catch up with them later on. Besides the most logical point of preserving your strings, just do a simple test after a long session and pinch a string with a piece of cloth and run it up and down the neck, you will notice a heavy build up of grime on the underneath part of the string. If you do not wipe this off it hardens and then besides making bends difficult, it cuts into your frets. Also the salt in your sweat will start tarnishing your chrome hardware. Really all unnecessary things to have to go through for not taking out a few minutes to wipe down. I have been handed so many guitars out of cases to check out that I did not even want to touch do to the thick build up of grime and gunk.

Oz you have to be kidding? I think that EB ASS was a honey! I guess a lot of guys must of played it in the store and they should of at least cleaned it up and put on some new strings. Just hit it really good with an EB wipe and it should do the trick. I really would not go the sand paper route off the bat.
