Also, Steve Clark and Phil Collen played a kicking dual solo on Die Hard The Hunter that should have been on there as well. Boy I miss Steven.
Ditto - I loved Steve Clark too.

P.S. - on the Neil Young thing - I did give him credit for his songwriting skill, and I like most of his material to be quite honest, but his playing . . . I have to tell you - my measure of a musician is live performance. I saw him live and it sounded like one of those comedy skits where the comedian comes out with a guitar and a harmonica and says: "This is every Neil Young song you've ever heard." Except the comedian was better. Sorry, just an opinion.

By the way - No Gary Moore? These guys are smoking *****.

Dennis,

Hey, we're all just swapping opinions here.. no tensions, bro!

And I love that Dana Carvey bit where he does "every Neil Young song you've ever heard". :D

The solo that made me want to learn to play lead was Tom Schultz on the song Hitch a Ride. His phrasing and note selection were incredible.

Did I miss seeing any Michael Shenker in there?

The tone, the notes, the phrasing, that we all learned from? The solo on the live version of Rock Bottom is still amazing....

This was one of my favorites growing up.

I'm pretty positive that this forum doesn't contain an astonishing number of Grateful Dead fans. That's fine. I love The Grateful Dead. However, I can totally understand why many do not. Regardless, don't be so quick to exclude Jerry Garcia from this list. Sure he may have indulged in a bit too much of the LSD and H. But there were times when he was absolutely brilliant, IMHO. :)

I never liked the Dead...Sorry Deadheads. Just nevergot it, but I do have a Dead joke. Wanna hear?

What did the Deadhead say when the acid wore off?

"This band sucks!"

Again my apologies to the Dead fans out there. I mean no harm. Really.

I'm not a DeadHead, but my brother-in-law is. I really never got it. Everytime I think of the Dead I hear that song "Truckin" in my head. Anyways, I'm sure they were/are really good musicians, but I could never listen to their music long enough to make a judgement call on it.

:D :D :D

I don't consider myself a 'Deadhead" or any other type of *insert band name here* head. Just an appreciation for some of their music. Not to mention, that they paved the way for bands like Phish and the Dave Matthews Band...two bands that I really do love! :) It's all good.

My older brother is a bit of a dead head (not so much these days, but back in the 80's). Consequently, I had to hear a lot of their stuff around the house. I never really liked much of it, but the song "Terrapin Station" is enjoyable for me.

I do own several Jerry Garcia neckties, though. And they are cool!

You Mac guys would be interested to know that Jerry was a Mac user as well.

Oh and why is it that no instrumenatlist recording is above 29th? Did you notice how Satriani and Vai were 29th and 30th? Kind of like the editors said: "Well, we better get them in the top 30, or it just won't be believable". Egads.

And how could I forget? All those "great soloists" ahead of Navarro are also ahead of Petrucci!!! And Beck!!! Come on! Argh..........

Actually Eric Johnson's Cliff's of Dover comes in at #17. Still a pretty controversial list though, I am still scratching my head at some of them.

Still though not as bad at that Rolling Stone list of 100 greatest guitarists that managed to find 50 greater than Eddie Van Halen.

I was mostly into Maiden, Metallica and Slayer type stuff back in the 1980's when I was exposed to the "dead", so they never got a fair shot. It always sounded like flowery country music to me. Sorry.

I did like "Flower Punk" by Zappa, though.

Now I'm into guys like Petrucci, Romero and Satch, so I just don't have any interest in the "dead". Never heard "Phish" either, and I lived in Vermont for a while. (For those outside the US, Vermont is where a lot of the old Dope smokin' hippies settled and had children named "Sunbeam" when their movement ground to a halt.) No Offense intended to anyone named Sunbeam :)

He probably pissed them off years ago.

(cancelled an interview, wouldn't pose for a cover shot, slept with the publishers mistress...Something like that)

No evidence. Just a hunch.

Yeah - You're right, but (and I'm not trying to pick a fight here :) ) I never really considered EJ an "instrumentalist" as much as some of the other guys. I mean, he sings on about 50% of the songs on his albums - all of em. Can't say that about, Satch, Vai, Morse, Moore, etc...

And another guy not on the list: Tommy Bolin. Man, could that guy play! And write and sing too! What a shame he left us early as well.

Best solo of all time... the outro solo on "Lady Writer" by Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits. End of story, IMHO. If you don't know this one, I strongly suggest giving it a listen.

Knopfler plays with so much feeling and dynamics.

One of my fav Page solos is from "Fool In the Rain"
