That 12er is cool, but if I was ever going to raducally modify one of my StingRay5 basses, I'd turn it into a 10 string.

actually flywheel im pretty sure he tunes with DGCF. with the octaves of course. he said he was worried about the string tension on the neck so he drop tuned it to relieve some of the tension.

Hey dudes:

thanks for the interest in the 12ver. I will post some soundclips soon. It is indeed tuned DGCF for the reduced tension. Sometimes I drop the Ds to C. You can use a pick or fingers, and I do occasionally slap it and strum it. It`s not hard to play once you get used to the tension and the spacing of the strings. With a little practice you can play just the bass strings or just the octave strings. If you use 2 amps, 1 for clean bass and one for distorted octaves, you can sound like a bass player and a rhythm guitar player at the same time.

Why 12?

1. I started playing 12ver cause I wanted to get out of a rut. I originally wanted an 8-string but I found a Galveston 12ver on eBay for cheap and thought it was insane and therefore exactly what the doctor ordered.

2. I tried to make my Galveston sound like a MusicMan, but had limited success. So I thought that maybe making a MusicMan sound like a 12ver would be easier. The OLP was cheap and sounded almost as good as a real MM.

3. It was the next logical step after this:

But the best reason for playing a 12ver: it annoys the heck out of guitar players. :D

My next project is going to be an OLP 4 string body and a Moses graphite neck I have kicking around. Then maybe a 5 to 10 conversion. I try and get the `donor`basses as cheap as possible, cause the hardware costs quite a bit. Actually the hardware on the 12ver cost more than the bass did. :(

Adam,

How long did it take till your left hand got used to playing the 12 string? The few times I had tried a 12er in a music shop, I thought it sounded very cool especially after hearing Doug Pinnick play one, though my left hand tired quickly. The ones I tried (Hamers) could have been set up better, but I still thought it would take quite some time to get used to.

It was about 4 months between getting my first 12ver and having enough endurance to gig with it. But I have tendinitis, so I had to be careful and work up to it. My Galveston had a huge wide and thin 27-fret neck and I never felt 100% comfortable with it. As far as I can tell, the OLP 5's neck is identical to my Stingray 5's, so even as a 12 string, it felt really familiar and comfortable. I find if I don't play for a week or so, my chops disappear on the 12ver. The flip side is once you play 12 string, regular 4 string basses feel like little toys -- so easy to play!

Thanks,
Adam
