I recently ordered a JP6 koa from guitar center, and it arrived today (sales mgr sent pics but I haven't picked her up yet)

The first thing I noticed (besides the amazing top) is the 12 fret inlay - it is the standard double shield/dot inlay, not the BFR emblem inlay like I have on all of my other JPs. When placing the order, I asked the GC manager to check with the EB rep about this inlay specifically, and the info relayed back to me was that all come with the BFR plate as that is the only option...

So why does mine have the standard, dull dots instead??? Is this a mistake? It's an amazing work of art except for the bland 12th fret! This was a custom order JP6 Koa w/ebony fretboard...

Hello, after January 2013, the 12th fret inlay was omitted. You should have a BFR script on the neck plate.

Thanks for confirming I should have the BFR script/neck plate. Is this something that EB can resolve for me? Like I said, I haven't even accepted delivery yet from guitar center.

You could contact customer service; they are very helpful. However, if the resolution you seek in the installation of the fancy Ball Family Reserve inlay at the 12th fret, you may be disappointed. Good luck!

By the way, I just received a Koa topped Luke (no 12th fret inlay on mine, either). You have 30 days to return a guitar to g.c., so I think you should wait until you get your hands on that bad boy before you decide that the inlay is the deal breaker for you. The build quality is so amazing, that you may soon forget about the inlay. Koa tops have so much depth. The koa grain on mine seems to shimmer under lighting. It's a work of art!

You can't see the wood grain shimmering in this pic. Only in real life, but I am serious...

The neck should not have a BFR inlay at the 12th fret.

The back of the guitar should have "BFR" engraved along with the serial number.

Whoa! That is a killer top!!!

Right?!!! It's a gamble when ordering - never know exactly how the top will look. I absolutely love this top. I'll contact customer service to see what options there are if any. I definitely don't wanna let this top go.

I am so confused now. Have I been reading the first few replies incorrectly?

It's just that I expected my new one to have the same 12th fret inlay as my JPXI. hence starting this thread.

Sorry if my wording was confusing...all you can have now on the fretboard are dots (shields in your case). The BFR script I'm referring to is stamped onto the metal neck plate. Simply the letters: BFR

Yes, you have.

When GC rep said "BFR plate" they meant plate as in neck plate (the steel plate that the 5 neck bolts pass through). You will not have the inlay at the 12th fret. Sorry to disappoint you but you misunderstood what you were getting.

Fantastic top though! Congratulations! :)

Ok. Got it. Thanks all. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a mistake or a fluke on EBMM's part.

I'll post some better, non-phone pictures once I bring her home on Saturday :)

We seem to get a lot of questions on this.

Wasn't there a survey? Didn't people like the inlay?

I'm the guy that posted the poll - expected the majority to want/miss the inlay (as I do), but the split was pretty much 50/50.

Don't mean to speak for Big Poppa, but to paraphrase him - when it was introduced, some loved it and some hated it - when it was replaced with the neck plate, some were happy it disappeared and some we're sad.

I see his point, which is basically, "you can't make everybody happy!" :)

Bottom line - it was here, now it's gone - therapy is helping me deal with that! :D

I love the logo (already stated in previous thread), so I found a 2013 that had it and was still new. I know of I want that logo now, I either buy used or find another gem like my JP12.

That said, I would not give back that Koa top the way it looks over the logo... ;)

Oh, don't worry - It's not going anywhere! That top will be mine forever :) I was just worried something got screwed up with my custom order when I first saw it.

This is the final piece to complete my arsenal. It will be replacing my JEM7VWH as my main six.

I know exactly what you mean now that I'm actually holding mine! My koa shimmers in sunlight as well! So hypnotic; I could stare at it for hours :) I can't say enough about the craftsmanship of this thing!!! Kudos to EBMM
