Just got off the phone with Steve in CS and the new pot is on it's way.

Woo Hoo!!!

I don't have another gig until April 21st so I will have plenty of time to get it and get it installed before then.

so...

will pots that have a much beefier shaft fit in the bongo?

so you could in theory replace the skinny flacid pots with ones with much more girth?
No one much remarks on it, but have you noticed that Bongo pots are not 'panel mounted' to the top face of the bass? This differs from every other bass or guitar I've ever seen. Didja ever look inside the Bongo? Looks like the guts are all on a steel chassis, including the pots, and so the knobs just poke out of the holes in the top face of the bass body.

Let me know how it goes, Larry. I have one with a knob that isn't quite right, and I've bent it back to nearly right, but I still have the desire to bend it more....and my soldering skills suck.

You'll be fine replacing the pot, Larry!
I did it to my DG Bongo, and I didn't even remove the circuit board. If it happens again I will, though, because it get's kind of crowded in the cavity.
Here's what a Bongo volume pot looks like, btw:

The one on my DG Bongo was bent when I got it. I've got it pretty straight now. I really whacked this one good though. Every time I tried to straighten it out, it was still bent. The last time was as I was packing up. I was putting pretty good pressure on it and it just snapped.

Thanks for the preview Strummer! I will definitely remove the board before I try to solder the new pot in.

Come on over and do this for me. ;)

It's only a little over 700 miles of driving. Probably no more than a 11 or 12 hours from where you are.

But this time we would make sure to hook up with Jack, Paul and Ray. I can guarantee it would be more fun than boot camp. Although if you wanted it like boot camp, I'm sure Jack could arrange that too. :p

Well, Larry, if either you or Jack get stuck, gimme a call. I'm in town, and have been working on stuff from surface mount on up for years, and have a dedicated shop and all the right tools . . . . . test equipment as well.

I just wanted to update all of you on what happened.

I called CS and ordered a new pot Monday before last. It arrived that Thursday. I took it apart and soldered in the new pot this past Monday. I played it at that night's rehearsal. Just like new!

EBMM customer service really does rock!
