Ok- I recently got a 77 Stingray from a friend of mine. It still works, but needs refretted very badly. All the hardware is still in excellent shape.

Here's the thing. The original electronics have been pillaged, not even sure if the pots that are inside are stock or not. No wiring to the battery compartment or anything. It is essentially wired like a p-bass. What would be the treble pot is currently serving as a tone pot, and the bass pot isn't even wired.

So, can't find any schematics anywhere, what can I do to restore this 3-tone piece of antiquity to its former glory?

Thanks!

Kevin

Since this is a Pre-Ernie Ball piece, we may or may not be able to help you. This is a question for Dennis Rotterman, our warranty repair expert. You can email him directly at [email protected] or call (800)543-2255 ext. 237 Monday through Thursday 9-5 pacific time.

I have never found any wiring schematics for any Music Man instrument, pre-EB or EB. It was rather frustrating. I really like the sound of the stock pre-amp, but I can't find any diagrams to show me how to put one in, what kind of pots should be in there, etc...

Dennis replied to me that they would like to refret the guitar for me (they are filed flat, half the fret is gone and there's still a ton of fret-wear), and install the correct electronics for me if they can find them.

I'm a DIY kind of guy, but I'm willing to give that up to get what I want...

Sorry I can't help ya find what you are looking for.

Do a web search under "used basses". I don't remember the web-address, but I came across a few last night with wiring info for the original MM basses. If I come across the address, I'll let you know. D.M.

Have you seen any for a 2 band EQ system - I checked out that site but they only show 3 band EQ's.

I'm actually looking into installing an Aguilar OBP-3 inside of it, I contacted them regarding the wiring for a Music Man. They didn't show any diagrams for a single pickup bass.

Thanks again!

Welcome.

This site contains a ton of info on pre-EB 'Rays.
SERIALS Pre-EB - Musicmanbass.org, Music Man, Musicman, Music Man Bass, Musicman Bass, Music Man Guitar

Judging by your serial#, it's probably in the 81-83 range.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be around with questions to help determine the correct age.

Waylon, B0227xx is going to be an early 80's bass. It will have a 4-bolt neck and top load bridge.

My '81 is B022xxx, but as Mynan pointed out it could be 81-83 since the bridge plates were randomly grabbed when they were assembled. If you happen to ever have the neck off you should most likely see date stamps.

Wiring for Pre Ernie Ball Music Man Bass

My late husband was a Music Man dealer and certified repair tech. I also have two natural Ash basses, fretted and fretless. I will look in the workshop for his wiring book as I know he had the wiring diagrams, along with some parts.

That is very sweet of you. We'd love to see photos of those basses if you ever have the time.

I will see about getting the photo's of the basses soon. That anvil case is a bear to lift! Next to me and his children, these basses were the loves of his life, so will be glad to share with any who have an appreciation of the same.

Lots of us here would appreciate seeing those basses, but don't hurt yourself with the Anvil. I know how those are.
