1978 MM Stingray with Rosewood?

Did Music Man make the 1978 Stingray with rosewood fretboards? Love the bass, but I've never seen anything other than maple.

I watched a DVD Gary Moore live...somewhere... I don't remember the Title, anyway, bass player played pre EB Stingray with (I'm pretty sure) ebony fretboard!!!

Is that possible?
Nice whole black SR4, including vintage bridge with mute pads, matching Headstock and if I remember well, black ebony fretted FB without dots?

Anyone else watched that DVD?

Anyone comment about wonderful bass tone? What a bass tone, man, someone tell me which Music Man model is that?

okay, well i pulled the trigger. a 1978 Pre EB 3 tone SB, white guard and rosewood neck. B0096XX. I'll put some pics up once she arrives. Does anyone know where I can get a vintage black guard? May want to switch it out.

That is a beauty! You should probably check the neck date just to be sure as I don't recall seeing any fretted Rosewood board basses before 1979. I also thought the white guards were only on the very early Stingray basses up to early 1977. You never know with the pre EB basses though.

I will. The decal seems to coincide with late '78 serial no. I've gotten a few who have told me that the rosewood was always an option, but not in the brochure, so it wasn't very popular.

That is true. Aussie Mark had a very early fretless Stingray that had a rosewood board and I think all of the later fretless ones were Ebony. I love the 3 tone sunburst.

I honestly haven't ever seen a rosewood FB on a fretted Pre-EB-Bass.

So sorry everybody for telling fairy tales. I'll try not to jump to conclusions in the future...

Fretted Rosewood was introduced at the end of 1979. The only Rosewood before that was fretless.

White pickguards were optional in 1976 and for a short time in 1977.

The "teardrop" cases were introduced c.1979-80.

Get them top pop the neck so you can inspect the date.

Thanks! It could be a 1979 I guess. The serial is B009610. In any regard, I got a great deal and I'm glad to add her to my 2009 Ray 4HH.

From the headstock logo to the way how strings run through bridge and body.
