I was reading Guitar Player and it says Leo Fender stated that the Instruments he was making now are better than his really old ones, but that hed never tell anyone that.

I bet it carries over, id say go with a new one! :)

I think, "Well, I've never played that bass, so how would I know?"

I'm one of those guys who thinks that modern era Stingrays are actually better than the ones produced in the relatively short period we now refer to as "pre-EB", so my opinion is sometimes suspect amongst the "vintage must be better" crowd.

Never bothered me one bit. I had a 64 Jazz that was originally Fiesta Red but by the time I got it (1971) it had turned to a frightening Pepto Bismol pink shade, earning it the name "Bruce".

Apologies to anyone named Bruce, but I was playing rockandroll in the Deepest South in those days, so go figure. And I didn't name it - drunken patrons did.

Bruce was a good bass, but nowhere near the garden variety 199X inca silver MIA Jazz I bought for 500 bucks back in 2001, 2002.

Same with the Stingrays. The one I bought in 77 was a great bass. I still maintain that the best four string 'Ray I ever played or owned was the black sparkle SR4 which I think was maybe a 2002 model.

Now THAT is the one I really miss, even now.

Screw 'em, Gavin, so many people blah blah blah and haven't even compared the pre-EBs with the new ones.

Say what you mean, eh!

Rod T, thanks for posting the "my 89 is in front of my pre EB." I will refer to that whenever I see an older Stingray that knocks me out. My 89 is a little traveled (nothing major) but I think it is just killer. I have almost no other experience with Stingrays though I have owned a handful of other very nice basses. My Ray just seems like a perfect match for me. I also own a USA JO that is just amazing but it is another breed. The 89 Stingray is my workhorse gigging bass. I love the sounds I get with it through my Eden WT-400 and two Epifani T-112 cabs. "How sweet it is" Most of you guys are too young to know what that's about. :)

Sweet. A fellow GK nut. I love GK, but I really love the way the EBMM basses sound through the GK stuff. It really seems to capture and reproduce all the great qualities that make EBMM basses so sweet.

And Dave, you can send me as many photos as you want, when you have time that is.

So how do you like the 1001RB-II, after being an 800RB player for so long?? Do you use Gk cabs as well??

Yes you are so right, Nothing sounds better then an EB Ray and a GK Amp.

Well the 800 RB is a workhorse and will always be close to me as a 2nd amp, but the new 1001RB II just are so clean and Kick some Butt Nice sound Di too

Im not a big fan of thier Cabs at all, they don't use the best sounding speakers for my liking, Their Cabs are built very well tho, reminds of the way the old Ampeg one's used too be.

Ok i think im getting a little confused. What if anything did Leo Fender have to do with this company. I thought i read something about him being involved with Music Man.

Yes Leo Fender designed the stingraybass and built them from 1976 til 1979, then Charvel built Music Man from 1980 til Ernie Ball Bought Music Man in 1984 and from 1984 til now the Best Music Man Basses on earth are being built.
