Hi,

Buddy o mine asked me about replacing his truss rod on his '78. He said the nut is stripped (where the wrench goes in). I haven't seen it yet.
So can these be replaced? Any suggestions on how to adjust it in the mean time?

thanks

Yes, you/your luthier can steam out the skunk stripe intact,
replace rod, and re-instal stripe. Also, Stew Mac has a kit for
restoring the stripped end without removing the rod. Such a
kit is not cheap, but for those jobs where it avoids removing
a fingerboard it's worth it. Skunk stripes are much easier than
FBs. There's a recent thread here [somewhere] by someone
who successfully did it as a home repair :)
